NOT happy Jan!

Hi all, I went to visit my breast surgeon yesterday. I saw him 2 and a half years ago and he put me on his waiting list for recon surgery at the Austin in Melbourne, a 3 hour drive for me. Finally I am at the top of his list and he tells me I have to have a BMI of 30 for him to do my surgery.

I couldnt believe it! There was no mention of this over 2 years ago when i first saw him! If he had said something them I could have lost the 15 kgs and been ready for the surgery easily in the two and a half year wait!

Ive heard others talk about this but as he hadnt said anything about my weight then I assumed (yea I know!) that he didnt require a particular weight. What a let down.

  • Hello Keryn,

saw your blog when searching for Austin Hospital and am wondering how you are going on your weight loss challenge?

I have been referred to Hamish Farrow who I believe does public work at the Austin Hospital. Is this your PS?  My case is a tricky one, I have had a lumpectomy followed by raditaion.  Finished 6 weeks ago, so far so good, except for a new lump that has come up in my ax gland, am getting ultrasound on Monday and trying not to stress too much.

My bc breast is now 12C with other breast 12F would like to reduce this one. It would be an 8hr round trip to go and see Mr Farrow, so am wondering if it will be a waste of time, as this may be classed as cosmetic?

Do you think your surgeon was sympathetic towards you as a public patient.  Sometimes I am not sure if we are just a number.

I am weight concious, walk my 2 dogs every day if possible. When first diagnosed I was walking 15klms a week with my dog Fudge, during radiation Fudge got hit by a car and we didn't think she would make it.  Wonderful hubby quickly got replacement. Fudge has made a miracle recovery and now has a playmate Boo. Life is not meant to be easy is it.

    Take care

  • Hi everyone. Just touching base to let you know how Im going in  my battle to loose 16kg so i can have my reconstruction. Im 7 weeks into my diet and have lost 7 kilograms. Im amazed that it has come off. Yes its an effort and Im getting bored with eating well, but when I see the kilos going Im feeling better about the work.  To let you know what Im doing...Im eating Lite n easy for tea and soups for lunch and just my usual breakfast of cereals or the belvita biscuits.  So 7 down and 9 to go, but Im feeling healthier and happier in myself. I was warned about loosing weight too quickly and then putting it back on, so i think 1 kilo a week is about right.

  • Hi, thanks for the replies. The surgeon said i can call when im within a couple of kilograns of my goal and they will put me next in. So i just have to get my act together and work at it. But would have been so much easier to do it over 2 years.

  • I can imagine how disappointed you must feel.  I agree it is not easy to lose weight - you might need to get some assistance to get you on your way.  15kg sounds a lot when you are at the "beginning of the race".  If I was you I would break it down into smaller more manageable pieces.  I always like to have a "vantage point" to work to in order to achieve things.  Try not to lose faith - if you want something bad enough - it will happen. • What a BIG let down, after waiting over 2years and a 3 hour drive! You probably feel so annoyed and frustrated. He should have told you to lose weight when you first saw him.I hope you haven't been bumped down the list too far. It's not easy to lose 15kgs - I've struggled to lose 2! You will just have to find a way to lose the weight and you shouldn't have to wait another 2 years-that would be very unfair.Perhaps the "weight thing"  should be documented in reconstruction fact sheet/info etc.- something to look into and perhaps spare others from disappointment.Take care Keryn and I hope recon is within your reach soon.
