Night before chemo

Hope everything goes well for you today. Had my 1st chemo over a week a ago and it wasnt as scary as I thought. Again drink loads of water, may be a little inconvenient having to go for a wee every to minutes but it helps. If you feel nauseous take the meds they give you.  Ginger beer also helps and I'm obbesssed with Bugerim Ginger Bear Lollies.

Thinking of you this morning as you have your first chemo.  Big hug!

Don't forget to drink lots of fluids afterwards to flush out your system.  Ginger beer is also really good if you are feeling off colour.  Ginger tea and biscuits also.

Hi Linda, best of luck with your chemo, the port will definitely make it easier as there won't be any hunting for veins. I have had my port in since March as I have had Taxol and now Herceptin. There is a numbing cream called Emla which you can get off the oncology staff and a clear plastic dressing. Put the cream on where your port is, an hour or so prior to chemo, don't rub it in and then the dressing over the top of it. This will numb the area and you shouldn't be able to feel the syringe go in. (I still can't watch them do this) then a small plastic thingy will be in place on top of your skin over the port and a short catheter which then gets hooked up to your iv line. It does get a bit easier after this first one and you know a bit more about what to expect. If you have any concerns about side effects etc afterwards just let us know what you are experiencing and someone will be able to help you with some advice. Take all the medications they give you, let them know if these do not work well for you, as they can alter them. Drink lots and lots of water to flush it through and you will be right.
