Hi Linda, best of luck with your chemo, the port will definitely make it easier as there won't be any hunting for veins. I have had my port in since March as I have had Taxol and now Herceptin.
There is a numbing cream called Emla which you can get off the oncology staff and a clear plastic dressing. Put the cream on where your port is, an hour or so prior to chemo, don't rub it in and then the dressing over the top of it. This will numb the area and you shouldn't be able to feel the syringe go in. (I still can't watch them do this) then a small plastic thingy will be in place on top of your skin over the port and a short catheter which then gets hooked up to your iv line.
