Next Step

I saw the Oncologist yesterday to get the treatment plan for what turns out to be the next year and a bit. Have pencilled in to start on Wednesday 18th September. A couple of weeks from now as I have an infection in the surgical site and am on antibiotics. The plan is: FEC for 4 cycles (3 weeks each) 3 week break Radiation for 5-6 weeks 3 week break Taxol each week for 12 weeks Herceptin every 3 weeks for 12 months (will start just after Taxol starts) Pretty straight forward. Just taking each day as it comes. So many appointments! xx Edited to make it clearer that taxol and herceptin will start together but slightly stagered.

  • I did not have a port. chemo nurses told me about drinking more water before an infusion which helped although still don't like have blood taken much less the 18m of infusions I hope never to have again. Veins at elbow were shot before 2 nd chemo but able to have infusions all the way. Had some trouble with blood being taken from hand after chemo finished mainly being a problem from unsympathetic "vampire ladies" for annual bloods but after 5 or more years now all ok and can have blood tests from my elbow again. Hope all goes well for the remainder of your journey. It does get better - although fear of getting a reurrence or new primary does not at least not for me - just learn to get on with life. One garden show 10 houses around a private school today and more orchid shows and spring fairs this weekend after voting for me. Its such a glorious warm sunny spring this year. • Your treatment plan is the exact same as mine was.. It's a longer journey than most because of the herceptin. If your veins are even a bit dodgy, please ask for a port. I didn't have one, & I regret it now. My veins on my left arm are completely shite, and the right side having the axcillary clearance, they can't always use them. Cannulas are now a nightmare.. Good luck with it all. Each stage is easier than the last. Kat xxx

  • I had 4 AC followed by 4 Taxatere & my Herceptin started with the Tax and continues for another 9 months afterwards. No rads for me but under the knife for double mastectomy and reconstruction. No breaks in treatment but I had to recover from chemo before surgery though. As everyone is different, nothing really is not out of the ordinary. Just get all the answers from your team so you understand your treatment plan. Sending you big hugs for your journey. You will get through. Love Janey xxx

  • Interesting schedule - questions I would be asking oncologist - why rads before taxol.  Why not herceptin with taxol?

Good luck and I hope that your infection clears.

I had 4 ac then 4 taxol with Herceptin starting with final TAXOL. radiotherapy week later since didn't want to start that later than 6 m following surgery . yet others had 4 or 6 week gap. And got to go on holidays. Guess we all are different
