?New Side Effect, definitely embarrassed

So far I have had 3 cycles of AC, the latest last Tues. and I must admit this 1 hit me hard, unable to work for the rest of the week and in so much achy pain. Started to recover yesterday but then....

i woke up this morning to discover I had wet myself :( I was pretty tired so not sure if that was the issue but I’m hoping this isn’t a thing?

should I call the nurses and mention it or see if it happens again?

  • Hi @JoeyLiz, I also had slight incontinence (both ways) when I has on Paclitaxil.  You have to make sure you are close to a toilet as when you had to go you had to go.  I started wearing slim pads as a precaution.  When I mentioned it to the chemo nurses they said they had not heard of this problem associated with chemo.  I have since finished with Paclitaxil and now on Herpectin and havent had a problem since.  Hang in there it does get better.
  • @JoeyLiz Hi JoeyLiz  the Continence Foundation of Australia may be a good source of information and support for this very common problem. They provide a helpline with continence nurse advisors that are able to assess the problem and provide specific strategies. The link to their website is https://www.continence.org.au/
  • Thanks for all the kind words. I was just a little startled to wake up wet. At 31 and no issues after childbirth I thought my bladder was good. But as you all say this chemo is pretty rough on everything.

  • Couldn't resist a comment here - at 72 after two prolapse surgeries and with another prolapse in train my bladder is often in hysterics. Even without chemo I can never be sure of making it to the safety of a toilet, so I wear a light pad pretty much all the time, and a heavier one to bed when I feel more irritation than usual. Nothing to be ashamed of or frightened by, so many women finish up in the same condition. Recent research is putting it down to damage in childbirth especially by forceps deliveries affecting particular pelvic floor muscles. Doing pelvic floor exercises can help some but not others. When you are processing a lot of liquids as in chemo treatment, and your whole nervous system is in disarray, the ability to hold it in on demand may be just too hard. But of course ask the nurse. Good luck. xx
  • I had major issue with continence on chemo. Mostly noticed on taxol. It was just a little leak, woke up in a start as had started leaking. Scared me. I'd mention it to your team though. All our cells are affectes by chemo. Kath x
  • @JoeyLiz please don't fret!  Think about what your body is going through with all that poison going through searching for stray cells to destroy so it stands to reason that there will be some unexpected side effects!  Just to name a few, eyes water uncontrollably at times, it's either diahorrea or constipation, nose drips, taste buds disappear!  It's just one of those things!
Take care and sending you a virtual hug xx
  • Morning JoeyLiz
I wet myself after every dose of AC - the first day after the chemo - just put it down to all those fluids and the first night I was zonked until I started the Dexes,  But ring the nurses for your own peace of mind.  Pam
  • Hey @JoeyLiz, it's probably a once off thing. Treatment is so harsh on our bodies and so exhausting. But if you're really worried I agree with Mel, call your nurse.
  • Hey @JoeyLiz

I'd definitely give your nurses a call, they are so helpful in eliminating anything that may be a problem. I don't think that's a thing on chemo, so absolutely check with them. It could be just one of those things...its such a gift isnt it? just keeps giving. I was very ill on FEC and couldnt work after the 2nd 2 cycles was in hospital for 2 days each time. Was horrendous! It could be that you are just so tired.

So I think for peace of mind, give your nurse a call am sure its ok. xx Melinda
