Neutrophils down to 0.0

Well I was getting ready for my 2nd round of AC chemo on 23/12 but after blood tests on 22/12 they rang and was told that no chemo for me cause my neutrophils had dropped to 0.0.  So off to emergency and was diagnosed with tonsillitis and temperature.  I actually felt fine and thought that I was having hot flushes only and getting a sore tongue but apparently not.  Nurses tried to get blood out of me but unfortunately my veins gave in, this was very frustrating and upsetting cause the more they tried to find a vain for the cannula the more frustrating and painful it was for me.  Ended up with the picc line and my neutrophils only went up to 1.5 after 4 days in hospital.  I have come out of hospital today but the minute I get temp again off to hospital I go.

Has anyone else have this happen to them after the 1st go of chemo and does anyone else have a picc line?

Merry Xmas Chriss xoxo

  • Thank you Scared Mum.... yes I didn't think 1st round of chemo would be that bad and that I will end up in hospital but we can't really predict can we? Yes I will be having the neulastin after chemo now too.

Hope you have a good Christmas xoxoxo

  • My daughter has a pic line after round 1 of chemo her levels dropped to 0.03 after her first round ... she was not well,  but I thought not sick enough to call the ambos )  I was mistaken mmm so 7 days in hosp later i know to call them earlier, we now have to inject her with neulastin the day after chemo to get her marrow to move its butt lol and has worked so far  :)

Her pic line gets changed every wed and she has no problems with it so far

    Merry Christmas Chris :)

  • Thanks Karen, as if BC is not enough for us we have to suffer even more with all the other crap that comes along!

Hope you had a good Chrissy....

  • Hi Chriss,

as if chemo isn't bad enough the complications it brings are a real nuisance. Like you, I ended up in hospital for a week with no neutrophils, no veins and a picc line. Be ready, because of all the injections to kick start your bone marrow, with the next round of chemo + injection the hip & back pain really kicks in. Make sure you have strong pain killers on hand.

As for the picc line, I was so sick of several failed attempts at Iv then bruising, the picc just made chemo so much easier. I wish I'd had it in at the start. Really important to keep it clean & dry, and of course no swimming. The good news is they take it out minutes after your last dose chemo, YAY!!!

just a thought, the salt water gargles are a really good antiseptic for your mouth & tonsils. Perhaps you could do them more often to protect yourself? Good luck with the next round of chemo, let us know how you go. In the meantime I hope you enjoy Christmas, family & rest.

    kind regards, Tracey ??????

  • Hope you were able to enjoy Xmas day. Adean xx

  • Hi Chriss,

What a damn pain for you. Like you, my neutrophils dropped to zero after my first TCH chemo. I was dreadfully ill and ended up in hospital for 5 days. Although I didn't get an infection (I stayed away from everyone) but I  have autoimmune pancreatitis as well and ended up having a full pancreatic attack on top of the effects of chemo. Blah. I had chemo postponed for another week which upset me greatly as I just wanted it over. I ended up having to inject myself with neulastin to get my bone marrow to kick back in after each treatment. My hips and upper legs gave me tremendous pain for a day or two afterwards.

I didn't have a picc line. They put a port in instead. At one stage they had to use a ultrasound to find a vein. Blah. It's an awful time and to be sick on top of it with tonsillitis is just yuck. I hope you start to feel better soon. It's hard but you will get through it. Take care. I hope you manage to keep out of hospital but if that's where you need to be then do it. Hoping you managed to have a smile today.  All the best and Merry Christmas to you and your family. Karen xox
