Nervous to start tamoxifen

hi ladies

I have just been prescribed tamoxifen to start when my radiation finishes and am eager to hear of others experiences with it.

There seems to be a lot of negative side effects posted here but my oncologist seemed to brush those aside and when I questioned him about it bringing on menapose he said no. So I'm a little confused.

Any experiences and advice would be appreciated.

I would especially like to hear some positives too.

  • Hi Kerr Kerr, when I started Tamoxifen 5 yrs ago,I got terrible hot flushes, low mood and sleepless nights. I persevered but in the end I got prescribed 10mg of Endep which is a really low dose antidepressant. It was a huge help and enabled me to keep taking Tamoxifen. I know ladies who have no  problems at all- you don't know till you try. What I would say is to have a liver function blood test and perhaps a pelvic ultrasound so that you have a baseline before you start this drug.As time goes on, Tamoxifen can affect your endometrium and liver and you wouldn't know it. I now have a fatty liver and my hair is thinning - another Tamoxifen side effect that isn't mentioned. On a positive note,it's very effective at preventing a bc recurrence. xx

  • Hi I have been on tamoxifen for just over 12 months. I suffer from terrible hot flushes, when I go back to the oncoligist I'm going to ask for something to help. In the beginning I was having herceptin treatment and the flushes were worse, I have finished herceptin and they have settled a bit but still not pleasant. I'm also very short tempered and anxious, now some of this can be the side effects from chemo, who knows I try and take it one day at a time. Sorry not to many positives, take care

  • Hi Kerr Kerr,

I started taking Tamoxifen a few months ago and have barely noticed any side effects.  My back gets a bit achey and I'm blaming it for me putting on a bit of weight (surely its not the toast I eat at night?!?) but its really hasn't been bad for me.

I take it with my dinner so that I get any side effects during the night while I am sleeping.

    cheers

    Mira
