Nervous about seeing my Oncologist + Halloween Costume!

Ok. So its 7pm and nerves have hit about meeting my oncologist tomorrow.

I am assuming he will outline what treatment plan they think will be best for me along with telling me all the side effects.

I know that lots of ladies have walked this path and it can be done - guess Im just scared of the unknown.

I know that chemo is on the cards as my surgeon gave me the heads up last time I saw her.  Ive been googling head covers, scalfs, hats wigs. Watching video tutorials on how to draw on your eyebrows and tie headscalfs.....

For fun I have even ordered a halloween costume! Each year I go to a thing called The Creepshow at The Espy.  Around halloween each year they decorate the venue like a haunted house and have about 40 bands over 3 stages and the atmosphere is fantastic! I have never dressed up for it but decided last year that I would this time round.  Decided to embrace my baldness and ordered a costume!

Planing on not wearing a wig just the hat and painting my face creepy.  Not sure what shoes I will wear (I hate heals) or if I will buy a walking stick to go with it or not.  Has been a fun distraction to say the least!

  • hi again :)

Im been on tamoxifen for about 8 days now and the nausea is lifting. I was a bit queasy the first few days and quite tired but that could be trying to get over radiation too.

I love my wig. Its a lace type one with hand stitched front section which means when i lean down it actually looks like my skin. Im a hairdresser by trade so wanted "Hair" more than hats and so far so good. i only wear it to work at home im GI Jane well...GI Jane with a short cropped hair style now lol. Its easy to look after and I use a sheen spray every 6 wears and wash it every 25-30 wears.

if your going to the look good feel good workshop, they have wigs to try on and teach you how to tie scarves etc. Also the cancer council in your area may have a wig library where you can get your wigs for free and change them reguarly so you dont get bored.

    jodie :)

  • While investigating the many options for wigs, have a search for Wigs on Wheels and see if they are in your area. As the name suggests, they come to you :-)

Hope your appointment went well today, all the best.

  • Hope your appointment goes well, like the costume:) I wish I'd have gotten a heads up on treatment, I had presumed with clear margins and no node involvement there would be no chemo, wrong! I was shocked and shattered to hear I would be having chemo. I am now 3 months post chemo and 1 month post radiation and improving everyday, not a pleasant trip but very doable. I have a nice wig which I am very used to wearing now, took a bit of time to get over being self conscious. Have been on my hormone pill (anastrozole)  for a week now, just waiting to see if any side effects are coming. All the best for whatever treatment you have, take care,

    Hazel xx

  • Yup! Surgery is over in done with which I am super happy about. I had two goes at getting it all and feeling like most of it is healing ok. One end of the scar area is really bumped out and tender where as the rest of it is healing nicely. I will ask about it tomorrow as they are checking 'the wound' as they like to call it before I meet the oncologist.

Ive noticed a few people have mentioned nerves about starting tamoxifen. I dont know anything at all about it yet as i am trying not to let my self get overwhealmed.  How is it going for you so far? Better than expected I hope!

I think I am going to buy a wig simply so I dont have to keep telling my story over and over! I work in a tiny jewellery shop and talk to SO MANY people each day and want to just be able to do my job not be gabbing about cancer all day (Yuck right?!).  Not up to going wig shopping just yet but happy looking at what is online and seeing where local shops are based.

Has your wig been comfortable? Any tips for when I do venture out shopping?

  • Hi Karen. I love your attitude. Your already looking to the future with your awesome Halloween costume. Well done!!! You can do this. It's a hard road but you will get there. I finished chemo 3 months ago and radiation 3 weeks ago. I've been on tamoxifen for a week now. I was more scared of that little pill than chemo. Weird I know. I got my wonderful wig from starkles and have worn it nearly everyday since November when I shaved. I also bought alot of caps, fake fringes and sleep caps from headcovers.com. They are fantastic and your order arrives within a week :-) Have you had surgery yet? Jodie xx
