More waiting!!!!

Well silly me, I thought today I was going to get my results and it would be sailing off into treatment land, oh no not for me its back to the waiting room.

The good news, no lympth node activity, and no chemo I believe. yay  for me.

Not so good news, the tumour was touching the chest wall so more scans to check my chest and stomach.

Recommendation to have my ovaries removed as the tumour was hormone receptive but the big whammy, I have to have genetic testing this starts tomorrow before they can decide the next step. How quick is that, My surgeon had referred me for genetic testing but now it has become a priority.

As breast cancer and ovarian cancer is very prevelent in my family before they do anything they want me to have this testing done.

If I carry the gene then it is recommended I ahve a double mastectomy, if I don't then its radiation.

I wish they would design a patience pill and I could pop that and all would be ok.

I had myself all ready for results today and what I have is more waiting.

However, I am super pleased that I am not having chemo.

So its back to the waiting room for me.

cheers

Donna

  • Hi Birgit,

well I had my councelling and testing all done today, what a rush thats the scary part.

They are also rushing it through so I don't have the usual wait. Its all very mind blowing.

I am going back to work tomorrow and trying to keep myself busy for the next 2 weeks.

Thanks for the emails and just being there, my head is not in a good place since I got this news yesterday and that is just not me. I am always so controlled and know what I am doing and which direction I am taking, I am not coping very wellwith this curve ball.

Also my 36 year old daughter was diagnosed 2 years ago, her treatments are finished and she is just getting her life back on track, I hate what this will do to her if my result is positive.

    cheers

  • Dear Donna,

No, no, you don't appear ungrateful. I didn't mean that at all.

And I don't know how I would have reacted with any other message than the one I got. And who knows what the future will bring. One step at a time. And relaxing and going along for the ride sounds pretty good to me.

It's good to have this network where we can let out thoughts and feelings, knowing that there are women out there who understand.

All the best on your journey

    Birgit

  • Hi Birgit,

thank-you for your kind words and i know 100 percent you are right.

I do know everything is for my benefit and I know that there is so much out three to help me, I hope I don;t appear ungrateful.

I was really thrown yesterday, it was just not at allw hat I expected, but I should know at my age not to expect really.

Today is the start of another chapter and I have decided to relax and go along for the ride.

    cheers

  • Hi Donna,

Good to hear that you need no chemo!

There seem to be a few things we have to learn on this journey. One of them is patience. Jo is so right, we can get used to ideas, we can get accustomed with what we are in for.

First I thought, oh no not another biopsy. Why do they do that to me. Until I realized that all the tests which are done are in my best interest. I was so overwhelmed about how people cared! I am so grateful that I am going through this journey now, and not earlier, because technology has improved. And I thank all the doctors, specialists and nurses and whoever else  is involved, that they chose to do this job, to help me, to help us.

I try to stay positive, thinking that I can handle whatever comes my way. Even though it is not always easy. And I hope you can do the same and find the strenght and optimism to face whatever comes your way.

Good luck and lots of patience

    Birgit

  • I really don't know alot abpout the gentic testing, my surgeon reffered me in December I got a phone call just before chrismtas, paerwork last week and then a call yesterday asking me to come today.

I will find out when I am there exactly what is involved and what it all means I suppose.

I do like the idea that it shapes my treatment and if this ensures no future canv]cers for me then yay go for it i say.

I had hoped to return to work today, but is being postponed short termed, I'll see what today brings me.

Good luck for you and your testing I hope it gives you answers.

    cheers

  • Hi Jo,

you are right, when I left the doctors yesterday morning my mind was clouded, I was really happy on one hand and not sure, confused and anxious at the same time.

Genetic testing was something that I thought would be looked at to help my family memebers etc so to be told its starting tomorrow and its for your own treatment, was a bit of a shock.

anyway as the day wore on I accepted the reasoning and the need.

Lets see what today brings me.

    cheers

  • So sorry your day ws so much suckier than we had hoped it would be.... but no chemo, and no node activity, is great news.

I'm awaiting genetic testing too...that would be the genetic testing I've been asking for over a decade and being told not relevant because only my paternal grandmother died of it in her 30s,....but then post surgery all of a sudden it became recommended.

If my recall is right...there is no such thing as a you have it or you don't result for this test. You get a you have it, or you get a we can't be sure you don't because you may have a different strain/the techonology is not there to test yours yet/it's a false negative blah blah blah. And they only pick up 10 per cent of BRCA1 and 2...does this match up with what you've been told?

Not looking forward to my own visit to this part of the waiting room.

I hope you find your inner patience gene. Or the self denial, nothing you can do about making the results come quicker gene, so just push it out of your thoughts for a while gene.

But really, I think it's great we have this sort of genetic testing to guide us on decisions that can shape our lives, and futures, in a hopefully positive way.

Wishing you all the very best for the next round of testing.
