Meeting with surgeon

Diagnosis of two DCIS and two invasive cancers in the right breast on Wed 5 and receiving update on more biopsies on Fri 7 has left me slightly numb. I am opting for a mastectomy as I don't believe I have a choice.

I have a rare and chronic skin muscle condition (dermatomyositis) which may be arrested after the surgery. This disease is often times malignancy based, how true is that! I am on blood thinners (DVT and PE clots)  so that complicates the impending surgery.

I am not sure what kind of questions I should be preparing for my meeting with the surgeon on Wednesday.

  • Hi Annie, I was also thinking and praying that you would be able to have round 2 inspite of the sniffles. I see you have the injection for the white blood cells too. That keeps me out of the woods too. I felt a little vague and bombed out of it yesterday after the treatment. I lost 2kgs since the last one but my blooc count was good. The rash has settled but the are going to watch me during this cycle to see if it's the disease raising its head and if it is they will have to increase my steroids. I take 10mg steroids everyday and I really don't want to take anymore. I know we are both almost half way. How exciting!!!! Hope you are enjoying playing with your new gifts. I have got quite used to my wig. It has little hightlights and people can't believe it's not my real hair, yahhh! Have a lovely weekendxxxx

  • Thank you for your practical tips Deanne. I was wondering about the after effects. I have had the same problems with my disease regarding stretching etc so hopefully this will be a little similar. How long were you in hospital for and how long afterwards did you need help getting in and out of bed, showering etc? How long before you could drive, go to the shops etc?

I am a sole provider of two teenage childrren. One is at Uni and the other is in Yr 11 so I am trying to keep the pressure off as much as is possible.

Did you have a sntinel lymph node biopsy whilst under? How did you prepare yourself psycologically for the loss of the breasts? I know people who have hysterectomies go through a grieving process, does this apply to mastectomies also?

Thank you for your time and support of me on this journey.
