Mastectomy?

Hi Ladies, I am 31 and was diagnosed in Dec 2013 with grade 3 TNBC. Tumour 1cm with 6 positive lymph nodes. I had a lumpectomy and full axillary clearance and I'm about to have my last round of TAC chemo next week. Now that I'm coming to the end of chemo I feel more nervous about having a recurrence and I'm considering having a bilateral mastectomy. My oncologist said that I have more likely chance of a distance recurrence the a local recurrence and advised against it. This doesn't give me a lot of hope because I can't remove my other organs but I an do something about my breasts. I will undergo 6 weeks of radiation but I'm speaking with surgeon and oncologist next week to try and decide what I should do. I would love to hear some advise from anyone else who has had similar experience. How did you decide? I am negative for BRCA. Thanks Lee x

  • hi lee ,just wondering what you decided to do in the end ?

    thx Doona

  • Hi Lee, I had a left mastectomy 3 days after being diagnosed. The surgeon refused to do a double mastectomy at that time. I am now booked in to have a right mastectomy in July and spacers put in to create room for implants down the track. I just don't want to have to think about checking for lumps, as I think we have enough to be paranoid about. Discuss it with your surgeon and do what you feel is right for you. Good luck with it all, so much to think about.
  • I did my 6 months of chemo for TNBC, no nodes involved. I AM BRCA1 positive, so my decision was easy, I'm 8 weeks post op now with bilateral mastectomy & 10 weeks post op with hysterectomy.

It's a very hard decision & I hope some of the other ladies can help you more then me.
