Margins, margins, margins

So after a 2nd excision, the pathology comes back with 2 tiny ducts very close to the margin. So close in fact that its within 1mm of the edge. My case and the pathology was discussed at the breast meeting and the decision was for close follow up. Hmmm mm not quite happy with that. Close follow up means you're looking for something to happen right? So I stewed about it all weekend and saw my oncologist on Tuesday who says "not a problem we'll just book you in for more surgery at the end of chemo!" legend! Finally a voice of reason! I can't understand in this day and age why some people are still conservative?
  • I didnt get clear margins so it was in the next week for the mastectomy. 3 weeks to recover and then straight on to chemo. I do still have more surgery to go. Mastectomy number 2 and recon. Got the call yesterday that its happening on 23rd July. I almost wish it was next week so that I dont have to stew on it for the next 5 weeks!! I know what I am in for this time:(

Dan, I hope your surgeon starts listening to what you want. Conservative or not, its all your choice. xx

  • Hi Dan, yep there seems to be a huge difference between surgeons. My margins were 1mm which I thought was too close, but my surgeon says radio will get this.( I have just finished chemo and am about to start radio.)  I am really concerned about this because they also found a satellite tumour 'by accident'. What margins did everyone elses surgeons consider clear?
