Life after Cancer?....define LIFE!

It's been a year since my diagnosis and all my active treatment ended in Sept 2015. But then came BRCA2, prophylactic hysterectomy, early menopause with hot flushes so bad, night sweats, sleep deprivation, cording, physio, port flush appointments….the list goes on and on...I feel like I am going to go nuts! and this week its all coming down on me so hard I feel like I can't breathe.
Life after Cancer?  define LIFE! I saw my Gynae Oncologist for my post hysterectomy check last week and in my totally sleep deprived state and being an emotional mess because of the hot flushes and night sweats that has been keeping me awake for weeks I just broke down! I’m 40 years old and it feels like I am over the hill! When he asked me If I have resumed sexual intercourse I cried even harder. NO I HAVENT! Because I am scares sh*tless of it being painful since they hacked out my cervix with all my other female body parts. Because when I look in the mirror I have one chopped off breast and another one sagging, I’m fat, hot constantly to a point that I get anxious from it and tired, I don’t sleep, I get up in the middle of the night to change my clothes that are drenched from night sweats, I feel like burning up when my husband just puts his hand on my thigh at night and have to flick it off. Then the Dr comments: ‘Have you seen a psychologist at all or thought about seeing one?’ Are you kidding me?? NO I HAVENT because no one can FIX ME! No one can live our lives for us after cancer but us, and no session with a pscycologist will fix my hot flushes or give me sleep.  I don’t want to cry any more than I already am crying. Where do I fit that in anyway? In between drs appointments, tests, port flush appointments, Lymph physio and WORK?
Today I am sick of cancer! I hate feeling like this.  I know I should be grateful that I am alive but I am so tired and scared and don’t see how I can do this for so many years, not to even mention the fear of that monster returning and having to go through it all again! When the dr comments again he says “yes unfortunately you can’t have hormone replacement therapy because of your cancer you had, so the menopausal symptoms unfortunately will be there and we had to remove your ovaries because they were a ticking time bomb” I cried even harder. I KNOW ALL THAT!!!! I just want some relief.

So he ends up recommending I go on a type of anti-depressant that apparently is known to reduce hot flush symptoms and so my GP last week has started to transition me onto the new anti-depressants. I was so sick over the weekend from withdrawal symptoms from leaving my other meds.
My one year post diagnosis MRI is coming up at the end of the month. I dread going. If that is all clear then my 2nd mastectomy will be booked in for early March! Yay!, let’s go hack off more body parts to try and stay alive! I cry so much. I don’t really have a ques    tion and I am sorry to be so negative. I am exhausted with the struggle, the cost the agony the fear. I hope and pray that soon I will be able to find some way of coping with this all.

  • Hi NE,

Have you thought about going to a support group? Your friends and family can give you heaps of love and support but they truly don't know what you are going through like a fellow bc survivor. Even if you just see them the one time you will feel so much better, i promise you. These people have been through exactly the same as you have and this gives you hope and encouragement. My group saved me from going over the edge completely.

All the best and ..chin up

  • Thank you Brenda.  Hope you are travelling ok after chemo.  II've been reading your updates. Hugs to you xxx

  • Oh Tracy, thank you sweet girl for your love and wise words.  Those simple words 'battle weary" gosh that is just it!  Exactly what I am.  I am exhausted from battling.  I have had good days too and I know we all get through eventually.  I feel so bad for venting because I dont want someone whos journey is just starting to be fearful.  Ive had many victorious moments along the way.  Thank you for holding my hands up while I am weak.  And yes, we will be here for you when you need someone to hold yours!  It feels like a massive relieve when whe can just say these things out loud (although online).  My daughter the other day said she was so glad my cancer is over and my heart sank because she doesn't get it.  And I don't want to offload any more on her than she has to know.  She is 18 and was so upset when she hear my BRCA2 gene gave her a 50% chance of having it too.  Anyway , I dont want to start again.  My children and their future is a whole other issue that I cant bare to face on top of this.  I guess the saying, one day at a time, one foot in front of the other.... Hugs xxx

  • Thank you Christine. Hope your appointment goes well and thanks for taking the time out to respond x

  • Gosh NE you are having a rough time of things. I don't suppose you can do anything about what you've been dished out in life except to hang in there. We're here for you girl. <3 xxxx

  • NE,

You HAVE found a coping mechanism for now....RELEASE! You have just released all those pent up fears, thoughts that you wouldn't dream of saying out loud to anyone! Scream, yell, cry! Jump up and down, punch the pillow......GET IT OUT! It's been such a traumatic and long road you have traveled and you have every right to feel this way. You are battle weary...

I have only just begun, and I am facing very similar avenues to you...it takes all of my energy to NOT think ahead! and maybe I shouldn't dare preach these things to you.... But you my love, you have BEEN there! And YOU have CONQUERED! See your scars as a reminder that you are stronger than what tried to hurt you. Sure bits are missing, but YOU, the essence of YOU is still alive! I know you have some more to go, but take a deep breath and face it head on! While it may not feel like it you do have the strength and will to keep fighting....So look in the mirror and say I am here, I am beautiful and I am winning!

We are here to support each other and i know I'll have my days when i will need the same said to me!   Wishing you the very best!

    Love and light

    -Tracy
