Late night Ambulance

Last week I felt as if pressure was building up in my head. I was irritable and very light and sound sensitive. I had a headache and it felt as if a vice was clamping down on my brain. Just before bed near midnight, I decided that I should get things checked out in case I had a slow intrcranial bleed or build up of CSF. So I rang the triage nurses at the local hospital and was told to ring an ambulance on 000 and come straight in. Not wanting to make a fuss, I rang 000 and asked for an ambulance to come very quietly with no sirens as everyone was asleep! Thankfully my dear elderly parents were here and able to mind the children while I was taken away. I spent all night in A/E under observation and had a CT scan to check for a bleed. I had to fast until the results were discussed with a radiologist just in case I had to be airlifted to Hobart for more surgery. Thankfully all was good and the pressure build up was deemed to be due to inflammation around the tumour removal surgery site. I was discharged at lunchtime the next day with instructions to resume taking 8mg of Dexamethosone daily! Not happy taking Dex again, but a least there is nothing more serious going on and I get to return home!

  • I had a spike of high temp of 38.8 just before we sat down to a very special yummy bbq on Sunday night that my brother inlaw had cooked special for me.  Needless to say I wasn't going anywhere until I had eaten my much craved bbq tea.  I took my beanie off and jacket it off and ate my dinner.  After dinner I took temp again and it was down to 37.7.  I was glad I didn't waste my lovely dinner and waited for a little while.

I would have to make a decision also of going to our local ED or travelling 1 hour away to the Regional but luckily I didn't need to make that choice.  As my Oncologist said it would be the same IV antibiotic type I would get at my local ED as it would be at the Regional??

I did have my emergency bag packed, my medication all packed, I also showered and put on a "nice" pair of pj's before going to bed that night......just incase but I was one of the lucky ones. Thank goodness.  Unfortunately we aren't all as lucky as I was that night :-(

  • Hi lovey, Sorry to hear about your little trip, but glad it wasn't too serious. I had a mild fever a couple of nights ago and had to wait and see if we were going to make the trip. If we did I then had to make a decision of going to the local hospital emergency dept (dodgy) or the next closest one which would mean an admission to the ward where I used to work! (awkward!) Thankfully my temp hit 37.5 and didn't go any higher. Phew! Hope you're feeling better gorgeous xxx Dan xxx
  • Hi Sonia

Sorry to hear that you had to go to hospital. But atleat it was the best  place to be. And not having a bleed - even better. You did the right thing, ringing and going to hospital.

Thank god for parents. They are always there when you need them. Bless them.

Hope you don't have to have any more trips there. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Take care and give your kids and parents a big cuddle.

  • Sorry to hear you had that scare Sonia.Better the dex than a bleed. It will reduce swelling and inflammation - maybe from the radiation too?My brother in law had swelling after head radiation and when they tried to cut out his dex he had terrible symptoms so back on the dex for awhile. Hope you are much better now.

  • Hi Sonia

That must have been so frightening for you and your parents.  You are so blessed to have them with you.  To have to go through something like that must be very difficult for you but you are showing so much strength and maturity through this whole thing.  A lot of pink ladies seem to be doing emergency trips to hospital at night at present.

That bloody Dex as we know is a shocker but if it helps you get over this hurdle and come out the other side then it is worth it.

I send you lots and lots of healing hugs and I hope you can wrap yourself in the warmth of the love of your family and stay well.

  • That's great news that there was nothing bad going on - inflammation certainly beats a bleed!  How frightening for you, though - so glad you made the call to the hospital and went in.  Your courage is inspiring - your family must be so proud of you. Take the Dex, take care, and lots of hugs - love,

    Michelle xx
