Last herceptin

Well it is my last herceptin treatment tomorrow ! and its been a very stressful day today. I have very mixed feelings about coming to the end of 15mths of 3 weekly treatments. The nurses in day oncology are angels, I would not have been able to get through this without them. My breast care nurse has been my closest confidant , a woman who has given me my voice. I feel like I am being put on a raft and pushed out to sea. to  see how well I go ! I know that my med onc is always there and I will be montored closely and all the signs are good but.....I am still very frightened. Maybe a sleeping tab and an esrly night is in order ? Regards Hilary

  • Just because you have finished treatment does NOT mean youhave to stop seing your breast care nurse etc (I believe, have been told, or read somewhere), you still need that help as you readjust to a different, non cancer treatment routine.

You will still have cancer worries and fears (like we all don't panic at least a little when we get pains somewhere or a lump or something new, even though the chances of it being anything are slim to none, that is human nature during and after this kind of journey).

I believe the cancer council also offer after treatment workshops to help you get back into a new non treatment routine etc (I read it on one fo their websites (not sure if all states etc, but did read it soemwhere).

Good Luck with your port removal too (not that you will need it).

My Chemo finishes in Mid/ End July and My Herceptin in April next year, so I look forward (at present) to those days ahead.

  • Thank you ladies I know this is the one place I can come to where people :get it::! port comes out tomorrow. It has given me so many problems I will be greatful to have it gone LOL It has been an amazing journeu thus far and I can honestly say the best part of it has been all the wonderfully brave ans strong women I have met along the way.So thank you one and all I ouldnt do this with out you xxxxHilary

  • Hi Hilary -- not sure if helps at all but lots of women find the end of treatment stressful, so you're not alone.

If you haven't already found it, there's some strategies that might help in the 'living with breast cancer' section of the site (here's the link if you want it: http://www.bcna.org.au/living-breast-cancer/emotional-wellbeing ).

And keep posting here, as much as you want -- it's always great to hear what you're up to. :)

  • Mine finishes on 23rd August and I am also worried about being on  my own and 'cured'.

I think we all feel that we 'have' cancer and will 'always have' cancer.

I too will miss my 3x weekly but good luck and best wishes for your future,

  • I know how you feel! I'd be lost without my 3 weekly herceptin. Mine finishes in October. I love the contact with my chemo nurses and the care and warmth they give each treatment. . It is a bond that is unbreakable and can never be underestimated. They have been my saviour as is work. The people that understand and are there every step of the way.

Take care Hilary and all the best for tomorrow. You will be in my thoughts. Keep in touch,

    Love Alison xxx
