Is this really happening?

I have just been diagnosed with early breast cancer! Am about to start chemo this Tuesday with the hope of shrinking a rather large tumour in order for the surgeon to operate. Initially, I will have 3 sessions at 3 weekly intervals! Am wondering if there are others who have had a similar experience as the stories I have read seem to have had surgery followed by chemo?

It is FEC chemotherapy. Does anyone have any hints on what to expect, how to cope or my preparation, etc. I would appreciate advice to help one begin this rather emotional journey?

  • Thanks for your reply.   Just take it easy as you never know - I hope I'm wrong but nausea might creep up.  Try sucking barley sugar - I found it fantastic for stemming the nausea if it happens.  Just kept on sucking on them and eating ritz biscuits...I did find that eating small meals often helped alot too.

I had all my treatment at Box Hill Hospital, my surgery was at Epworth Private (Eastern) - virtually across the road.  I went private for surgery 'cause my surgeon operates privately - funny thing was ....after I had my surgery i found out he actually operated at Box Hill!  :(

Keep strong and I look forward to hearing back from you soon shortly.

cheers and luv H (aka Helen Anne - yes with an 'e' - family tradition!)

  • Hi Mary

Sounds like you and I are travelling a similar journey! I have been surprised how OK I am feeling following my first of 3 FEC, but am wondering if this is the calm before the storm! I too have been eating small meals more often and am feeling tired, my head will feel quite heavy, no headaches but just telling me to lay down and rest. Then 2 hours later I wake up, and feel like I am able to do some chores etc. I have not made a call on work yet as I am a teacher so am really on holidays at the moment!!!!  I do admire you going to work, I am thinking I may be able to work a few hours at school but in an admin capacity not in a classroom!

Have you had any surgery or are you just beginning your journey as myself?

Thanks so much for your help

  • Hi Helen Anne (with the 'e')

Thanks so much for your help and support, I have just had my first cycle of chemo and surprisingly am feeling okay. I have had no nausea thanks to the anti-nausea meds the oncologist has prescribed, but am stepping slowly, just waiting. No mouth ulcers as yet? I am drinking heaps of water and eating small meals more often, actually I do not feel like eating much anyway? I am in the eastern suburbs in VIc! Will stay in touch!

    Many thanks

  • Hi Annie I've just had my first of 3 FEC, Iike you they are three weekly intervals. The first wasn't so bad, felt a bit nauseous but didn't chuck, now it is day 6 and I feel pretty OK. I just have a bit of constipation, Movicol works on that, and I get bloated and feel full most of the time. Small frequent meals help with that. I get very tired and have to go to bed ridiculously early, that's a bit annoying as I miss family life whilst sleeping. Still going to work but doing shorter days. I hope it goes well, let us know how you go. Best wishes Mary
  • Hi Annie

Just to let you know that I had 3 (and more) rounds of FEC so I totally agree with Kathryne's advice regarding, taste, ulcers etc.  I was given an icy pole each time I had it as the nurses told me it helps with the ulcers...don't know if it did or didn't but hey I wasn't going to knock back a free icypole!!  (Getting in touch with my inner child there!)

Emotionally each person's journey is very different.  For me it was just another illness I had to cope with, in this lifetime as I have had a myriad of medical conditions and illnesses.  It also helped that I have worked in Hospitals and Medical Specialists for the past 20 odd years, so I had some idea of what they were on about (no fooling this little black duck I can tell you!).

Please keep in touch and let us know how you go.  I don't know where you are - I'm in the Eastern suburbs in Vic - but we are all here for you.

    Take care

  • Thanks so much Kathryne, my tumour is very close to the surface so the surgeon is not wanting to operate at this stage? Will take you advice and appreciate your help. It is the unkown that I am finding difficult to deal with!
