I had my double masectomy

I am back from having my double masectomy, 2 sentinel node removals on both arms and tissue expanders put in on 4/11. I really was ready to leave on Sunday but could not leave until my drains were gone. Wednesday was crying because still had to stay another night in hospital.  Finally got home on Thursday.  I get the complete pathology reports next Wednesday 17/11. Yeah so happy to be home.  Still getting used to the idea that I can't do as much things that I used to before the operation or really diagnosis.  I never realized how much we use our arms and our chest muscles.  My chest feels swollen and sore kinda like that feeling when your milk comes in to breast feed your baby. Hard to sleep with.  My 10 year old daughter (who is always a cheeky one)  asked can she how my stitches and how the doctor cut my boobs out.  I laughed and replied you can not see my boobs thats a bit rude.  She said no it is not, you don't have any boobs now. You only got a chest and when you get the new boobs, they are not real so you should be allowed to show everybody what it looks like, just like men do. Kids they are so beautiful with their frankness.  Even so she might have a point, I will not be flashing myself to any men besides my hubby of course. • Hi Dot

If the 10yr old wants to see, I would let her but warn her that it's not pretty!  As for the others, I would not worry about one of them seeing and the others not....it is an individual thing and if the others aren't ready, then wait until they are.

    Hope all is going well,

    Louise

  • Sorry for not being online for a while, I have been busy with the kids and hospital appointments. Thank you for your advice. My daughter that asked to see them, is 10 years old. Yet my 16 year old Daughter is  a bit scared to look at it, So she look at photos and did not want to see it. Then my 14 yr old daughter is at that funny age and thinks thats gross to see her mum's boobs.  So do i let the 10 year old see it when the older ones don't want to see it. I also have a nine year old who has aspergers syndrome ( form of autism) so emotionally I don't think she will understand it. So any help and advice on what to do.  Thanks  Dot :)

  • Hi there Dot, so pleased that you have settled in at home after your op.  Nursing staff are so lovely and caring ... but there's no place like home ... especially being in your own bed!!!!

By now you will have your path results and your doc will have advised on your treatment etc..... I so hope that all is well.

I know how wretched and helpless I felt after a single mastectomy, so I guess I'll just double that and add a bit for you!!!

A couple of things to remember .... your doc advises you on the do's and dont's of things you can do ....  this is done for a reason -please take note and "do as you are told" !!!!  You may feel sick to death of the inactivity but as my oncologist told me - you are not superwoman!!!!  Don't know where he got that idea and I hate to admit it, but he was right!!!

As far as your daughter is concerned .... let her see your scars - wait till the wounds have healed an the stitches are out.  Knowledge won't hurt her, it will make her strong and she will feel included in this journey you are going on.  There would be nothing worse, from her point of view, than being excluded on the grounds that she is "too young to understand".  You wil be needing her love and support as well as that of your husband.

Take care of yourself and let us know how you are getting on .... or just pop in for a chat!!!!

    Cheers .... Shirl xx
