hunger pangs

Hi gals

does anyone else get hungry? I am waking up in the early morning hours feeling hungry. Usually I can't look at food until I've been up at least an hour, though since I started my chemo I am getting hungry and giving in to my pangs.

Just a bowl of rolled oats and some toast followed by some nice hot peppermint tea is what I have been having, though come lunch time, I am usually starving again - and I will have a nice big omelette or a couple of toasted sandwiches.

Is this normal? I am not usually THAT big an eater that I have a large helping. Just that now I have noticed it - today I even got a  headache that was only satisfied once I ate something.

Weird..

that's all

  • Hi Dette,

Yuk! I think the earlier way sounded better to me. I hope you are feeling a bit better. Today I went for a 1km (half each way) walk to post office without having brekky first and crashed on the couch at around 10.00am for 2.5 hours.

My partner is complaining that I go from meal to meal - have one, then wait a couple of hours and look around to ask - what's for ...(next meal)? Me thinks he thinks I am taking advantage of him being the cheif cook around here.

Oh well, we take each day as we receive it and go with the flow. Keep your fluids up as you don't want to dehydrate.I also found canned fruits and yoghurt to be a saving grace.

    Take care

  • Thanks Sam, I won't worry about the odd kg I put on - I have actually lost 3kg!!! which doesn't worry me either. I am a bit overweight and want to lose more weight. I am feeling fit enough to walk though, so will try to do some 10 - 20 minute walks each day if I can as it gets me away from being fuzzy and at the computer too.

I can also feel the wonderfully warm sun on my face instead of looking out the window and being lazy and saying 'wow, it's a lovely day' while I am losing it inside.

So far though all is going well and I am looking forward to all this being over before the end of the year - what a good Christmas present that will be...

  • Julia,

I am in eminent danger of putting it all back on again. The one thing I was thinking in an albeit macarbe way, was that I may just lose weight with this chemo.

I had the opportunity to ask my oncologist today if hunger pangs were "normal" she said - not unusual - there are a small number of people who feel hungry and she put it down to the "steroids".

so I guess, we'll have to walk around the clock, or just for 5-10 minutes three times a day. I'm not a "gym" person myself, preferring to do gentle exercise. So walk...walk...and more walk here I come!

  • Yes I found the same, altho i was on steroid meds for each dose of chemo infusion..they alway make u extra hungry.  I am currently on low dose of these & taking it daily..doc is trying to wean me off them, which is proving difficult as i am having them for reduction of swelling. I am still finding that i am quite hungry in the mornings, but with the drugs i am on I get very fatigued and not a lot of activity is happening, so i am not using all that energy. I feel now that i am finally getting a bit of a balance.

I think the trick is to walk or do some extra activity if u feel ur eating too much, but at the end of the day if u add a few kg's it doesn't really matter. My chemo team would rather me a little more 'robust' as one day i might need that to fall back on..they aren't worrried, so why should i??

Take care and don't worry too much about it.

  • Wow! Maria that sounds like a lot - I haven't got to the inbetween yet. I usually have muesli bars for a "snack". I may yet satisfy those pangs though as it sounds quite good to be eating instead of just picking.

Trick is always to stay away from snacking and I should be okay. HOw long did all this last with you by the way?

  • I also had hunger pangs, found I was eating breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and supper.

In one way looking back it was basicly keeping my energy up, I was eating quite healthy and yes in some cases quite large meals.

    All the very best.
