Hi quick question, I am having bilateral mastectomies with expanders this week and wondered for all those whom had had the same surgery how long you where in hospital and how long until you where allowed to shower, also did you have a urinary catheter on the first day, all questions I forgot to ask, I know about the drains think I get 4 as having sentinal node biopsy on one side, thanks in advance for all your time and advice ladies.

Who would of thought a little tube could scare me after core biopsies etc. Yes mine is the 30th May so will definitely want all of your gory details in an edited everything is great version :). You are probably right, I'm a bit nieve when it comes to all of this. I couldn't understand why I had to take off my lovely tracky dacks for my lumpectomy. I'm going to tell them to hold back on the fluids maybe then the drains wouldn't need to be in so long I would stop producing fluid and I can get the hell out of there lol. Hospitals have never been a place I am comfortable. Big sooky la la
Sorry Lara didnt mean to scare you, but at least if you had the catheter you wouldnt have to worry about peeing your pants lol, I was just thinking that as is pretty long op and they are pumping fliuds into you that it would make sense that you would probably have one, I am a nurse but havent worked in theatre for a long time so not sure, I work in gp clinic for past 17 years or so, and yes I know how if feels with everyone and the be patient lines, arr can be frustrating,would be great if we could time travel or way past all this wouldnt it

I had one mastectomy and stayed in hospital for 3 days.The drain came out about a week later in my surgeon's room.I don't know if that helps you- maybe check with your surgeon or breast care nurse.My best wishes to you for this week.

it really depends, usually 4 days +. I've stayed for 8 nights in Private Hospital, and had single mastectomy, lymph node and expander. Best to call your the surgeon who is responsible for your expanders & the drains (in my case) Bring a light & pretty tot bag + a scarf, so you can carry/hide the drains when you are mobile around the hospital. It was important to me, as I didn't want my young children to see them - it was "just mummy's hospital handbag ;)".
