Hi , it will be 10 weeks from my lumpectomy and SNB to see the oncologist , is the radiation still effective considering it will probably be 12 weeks to start? And I worry that it will be over 6 months before I start Tamifoxen and what if another cancer has started to grow?

Hi there Unfortunately we would like it to get on with the treatment, get another scan and find that it all worked, but I think our bodies need time to heal. Hopefully you trust your medical team, I didn't start tamoxifen until this month after chemo and radiation and my lumpectomy was June last year. I still don't ask enough questions, write them all down and ask the oncologist when you see him next. Hopefully he will give you answers so you can concentrate on the treatment and not worry so much. In the meantime, could you contact the breast care nurse - they usually have so much knowledge. All the best, Kari

Hi Lyndajma I was going to ask the same question, and literally stumbled on your post. I had my lumpectomy only a week ago and was told I need radiation, chemo and hormone therapies. I was led to believe I would hear from the oncology team this week but have since learned it is a waiting game and I am not a patient person. It will be our 40th wedding anniversary in July and we have planned a trip to Europe, to celebrate in Paris on the day. This, of course, was all arranged before I was diagnosed. So although my surgeon said it should be the last thing I need to be worrying about right now, I do worry, along with the thought that this aggressive b...... is going to take root again while we wait. So I think I know what you are feeling however, I have no words of wisdom for you. Perhaps we just need to trust the medicos to get it right. I wish you all the best. San-Dee

Hi, there are some best practice protocols around when to start treatment. I can't remember what it is for radiation but I remember with chemo, the protocol is to start treatment within 3 months of being diagnosed (so that allows time for surgery and recovery). [In the US, I think it is 4 months]. It would be good if you could see your oncologist sooner though - just to put your fears at rest and answer questions. I gather you can't get an earlier appointment. Perhaps if you call them and explain you are a bit anxious about the timing and would like to be put on the waiting list for any cancelled appointments that might free up a space for you? My radiation doc tells me it takes 6 weeks to get on the radiation roundabout.my oncologist wanted me to start hormone tablets after radiation, but that would mean 10 weeks!!! So radiation doc said to start them . I have a cat scan this week and my "mapping"

I am going to put up a calendar and cross off each day of radiation treatment, just need 19, 4 weeks, one day the zapper is serviced so a day off.

Good to hear Lynda.... We all look strong to the outside world. , but deep down we are very fragile... Hoping you get the reassurance you need to get through this, ... You WILL get through this!!

I think these worries are normal. Life is changed forever because we get no guarantees. I don't think I'll ever stop worrying about it getting worse and coming back even when/if I hear "cancer free".

So I will be on a similar time frame to you also as I had op on the 24th Feb as my first oncologist app is the 21st April so I might be starting 2 weeks after that?, I trust them just not my body any more. Hope your going well x

I remember saying at the start of all this that I would do exactly what they said and trust them, and I do its that now I don't trust my body to not do this again and hoping its not up to its old tricks in the waiting time. I am going to get some counselling to try to help me with these shitty thoughts. I hope all goes well for you xx

Trust is definetly an issue for me right now but more about not trusting my body anymore also. I just hope its not to long and nothing is missed etc. Hope youre recovery is going well.

Thank you we spoke with the Bc nurse yesterday and she is going to try to get appointment pushed forward to help with anxiety but she reassured me that it will all be under the time frames/protocol, sadly my brain isn't down with that going to go see a counselor to get on top of all of this.
