Herceptin

Just recieved a call to say that I cannot have Herceptin for the next few weeks, due to the 4 treatments weaking my heart muscle causing less blood flow to the main chamber of my heart.  This came as a bit of a shock to me and I would love to hear from anyone that might have had these side effects from using herceptin and how long did it take to recover after treatment stops?  I also have been having hot flashes especially at night, along with aching legs.   If anyone is experiencing these signs let me know.  Thanks Tanya...

  • Hi Tanya, Yes, it will be good when chemo's finished, the pain has passed! Thanks for sharing, it's good to know I wasn't imagining the amount of pain I was having and I will be more vigilant and take strong painkillers before the pain gets too bad. Wishing you the very best! Jeanx

  • Hi Janey, Thank you for your reply, I had the most awful night last night and am going to ring oncology to double check what I should do. I do need to take the edge off the pain, like you panadol does nothing, but your suggestion sounds good. I wish you well also, thank you again Love Jeanxo

  • Welcome to our sisterhood. I hope you are coping with everything and pushing through this awful chemo. Your right that the Docetaxel is dreadful. My husband dubbed it 'Doceshit'. The bone pain was pretty unbearable. When Panadol did nothing for me, my Onc suggested I take one more Dexamethasone table when the bone pain started to happen and for me it took the edge off the pain and I could get through it with anti-inflammatory medication. Hang in there Jean. Just keep focusing on the fact that this awful drug has a purpose and is killing off any rotten little buggers that may have snuck through. Good luck and let us know how you're going. Love Janey xxx
  • Hi Tayna, I am waiting to have herceptin on my fifth chemo, the oncologist said I couldnt have it on my fourth because of the toxicity to the heart. I get butterflies in the heart off and on and I just thought it was me going through menopause. My surgeon wanted me to have the herceptin but was told by my oncologist it was too risky. So last Thursday (4th chemo) I just had docetaxel. By the way the pain all over the boby is awful from this drug! If you did have pain what meds relieved it? I was told to take panodol but it did nothing, so I have been having anti flammatory which is better. Tayna it's good they are monitoring your heart regularly, good luck with this, hope you can start having herceptin soon, as we know it's a drug that fights this type of cancer so we do want it. Take care Jean

  • Janey I'm seeing my oncologist on Thursday I will discuss whether I should resume Herceptin after my scan on Dec 30th.  I've been reading up on cases similar to me and they do pur you back on herceptin but monitor you more frequently. Thanks for your support Janey.  Love Tanya xxxx

  • If your results are good after your scan in December, will you resume Herceptin? I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you. Love Janey xxx
  • Thank you Deanne and Janey for replying back to me.  Deanne I will take your advice and see if it works..  Funny thing is that my husband just bought a new coffee machine 2 weeks ago and since then I have been drinking more coffee than usual, so I will give coffe a break to see if that also effects me.  Janey I never felt the heart flutters but when I look back I was breathless and felt tired more than usual, but since having chemo I thought it was my body getting over it.  Janey I've had 3 heart scans since diagnosis and what I found out is that the last 2 MUGA ( eco cardiogram scan ) results were 68% then it fell down to 54% ( this means how efficient the muscle is to pump blood to the left ventricle ) What you need to do is get your results from these scans.  I'm sure if they were low you would have been notified by your oncologist suggesting that you have a break from herceptin in order for it to recover and bring up the MUGA result.  Janey I hope everything works out for you, you've had enough problems to deal with.. I've got a meeting with nmy oncologist next Thursday and at the end of December I will be having another scan to see if my MUGA result is hopefully higher..         Tanya XXX
