Headaches

Hi everyone. I had surgery five weeks ago and have recovered well except for one debilitating factor. Headaches!! Every single day, I wake up with a headache, ranging from a four to a ten out of ten. I'm having physio twice a week on my neck. I've been on HRT for 20 years for hormonal migraines and am clearly suffering from the withdrawal of that medication. Obviously, that's a no-go zone for me now. I will be starting Anastrozole in a month or so and am really worried that the headaches will be even worse. I'm in consultation with the docs but was wondering if anyone here has any useful firsthand tips. Any advice will be welcome.

  • Hi @HM , (does the HM stand for Her Majesty? ;) - only ask because we refer to my mum as HRH. - Anyway I suffered hormonal migraines my whole life (7-10 days every period) and I found that if I used Tiger Balm (red if migraine really bad, white if low grade) and smeared it all the way around my hairline, behind my ears, down my neck, had a stinking hot bath and some panadols I could normally break the migraine to the extent that I would be able to go to work, it wouldn't get rid of it totally but certainly made it low grade and handleable. I also at one stage tried acupuncture as well - still got the migraines though. Wishing you success to get rid of yours. Xx Cath
  • Thanks everyone for sharing and for your wishes. Will take note of all of your ideas. Cheers, Helen
  • I was getting a lot of headaches but it was stress. I went to a psychiatrist who has put me on Escitalpram but its only a very low dose to raise the serotonin levels in my brain. No more headaches or scary nightmares but I do sleep a lot now and get a bit of diarrhea every morning. I am on Tamoxifen but have been assured its ok to take the two medications together.
  • @HM I used to suffer Migraines alot but as the years went on they actually disappeared. Ive noticed since my surgery 5 weeks ago, I have had 3 strange episodes with my eyes and Im thinking these are strange migraines Ocular migraines. Anyway, 3 times too many and scary so am off to the Optometrist today to rule out any eye problems. I know for me my neck plays havoc! and I was seeing a kinesiologist which really helped with a special technique she used and honestly she really didnt even touch me LOL. I have osteoporosis in my neck thanks to Chemo, so whether mine stem from there now, Im not sure. Hope you find some relief, Hugs Melinda xo
  • I had awful migraines during peri menopause (I too had cycle migraines) but once through they pretty much dissappeared unless sleep deprived. (Luckily I didn't  start HRT as my cancer started at this time anyway)  I was worried about starting letrozole for the same reason but have had no issues.
Things that help me is really good hydration, neck massages and if all else fails phenergan ...as it is an antihistamines  (migraines associated with histamine ) and helps with nausea. It wipes me out though for a day of sleeping even at only 10mg.

Try to be conscious if you are unknowingly hunching your shoulders since the op. I found I was doing this as tense. So relaxation techniques and post op exercises helped too.

    Hope things improve soon.
  • So sorry to hear about your headaches.  Does your physio do manipulations? Osteopaths do them, they can help with headaches.  Best wishes Karen
