Hair today/ gone tomorrow

Well here we go, the hair has decided enough is enough and it wants out of this head. I went to bed last night with a thick head of hair and woke this morning feeling like the woolly mammoth had decided to shed his fur in our bed.

I have cried a thousand tears today and all over hair (how pathetic am I). Anyhow Paul has been great telling me how we knew this would happen and how beautiful I look, he wants to take me shopping this evening for a new outfit to make me feel better and has suggested we get some clippers and be done with the stragglers and start wearing some of the beautiful hats etc we have been collecting.

So here I am sisters, Big, Bold, Bald, Beautiful and on my way to being CANCER Free.

  • although i haven't lost my hair yet (only day 15 from first FEC treatment), when a wig shop told me they could turn my own hair into a wig for me for the very cheap price of $2,500 - i very quickly lost any attachment to my own hair!!

Hope you are keeping it warm, i heard using baby shampoo is gentler on your scalp and to remember sunscreen always!!

    take care

  • the hair loss was by far my most emotional moment! All things concidered I think you have the right to have a cry. Your partner sounds like mine was. I feel for them. As my husband said to me, it is hard for him to watch someone he loves so much go through something so tough.

Keep stong and as all NON BC people will tell you, it is only hair it will grow back!! They just dont get it do they!

  • Hi Kathryne

, I  too   thought I  was  prepared to  lose my hair ,  but it is  a shock  when it  starts   falling out .  I   started  to  lose mine in big  clumps  before  my  2nd  treatment , I am  now  on my  2nd last  treatment  ( all being  well)  and  my hair  is about a  1/4 inch all over  , very thin and mostly  white . I  look like a  boiled  egg !  No  one  that loves me  seems  to mind . Then  today , another   thing happened , I realised  all my eyebrows  and  eyelashes  had  gone ! Oh  well , now  I am  even more like  Humpty Dumpty .  I  bought a  wig , and  I  wear  scarves , as  even here in WA  it gets  cold . I have a little  woolen hat  I  wear in bed if it is  really  cold , but it  gets  thrown off in  the  middle of the  night  when I  get  too  hot .  I  am  not  brave  enough  yet  to not  wear  anything on   my  head .

I  wish  you  all the best , and I  hope  that  you  will be  able  to  come  to terms  with  the  loss of  your  hair , just as  I have  done . Remember , it  will grow  back , and it may  be  better  than  ever  !!   Chas xx

  • Hi Kathryne

After a little thinning loss, I too lost it in clumps - blocked the shower one morning (3-4 weeks after 1st FEC)!! The extra water from the tears probably didn't help either!! It was the clumpy bald patches that did me in and I shaved it the next day and have been really happy since. I have had to wear hats to bed, etc as it's a tad cold in winter in Tassie but with the hot flushes at night since Taxotere I'm also hatless at night most nights. I happily wander around home without hats or wigs and haven't had any worries about wearing my wig (really pleased with) when I go to school or out for special things. Hats are tending to annoy a little more since Taxotere as well. I'm hoping that maybe once summer comes, scarves will feel okay because I don't want a burnt head!!

I admire your BIG BOLD and BEAUTIFUL approach and it sure sounds like you'll work through this in your own very strong way.

    Take special care, Dette xxoo

  • Hi Kathryne,

I have had 3 fec's and 1 taxotare now and still have some hair all over head.  It is very thin and I always wear a headcover when going out, but I am glad that I left it there rather than shave it.  When I am outside in my garden, it feels nice blowing in the breeze and my kids say keep it.   I have only just had treatment 4 so maybe it will all still go, but for now I am happy to have it!.

    all the best!

  • You are not pathetic. It's normal to get upset about losing your hair.I think I was more upset about losing my hair than my boob-how crazy is that!! I was ok at first wearing "stuff"on my head but as time went on into the summer months it drove me nuts cos the hot flushes made me want to rip my hat/scarf/wig off.So it's not just the vanity but also the discomfort. It took along time for my hair to grow back-over 6 months-so I now consider myself an expert in "head management"! Good luck with your treatment-hope all goes smoothly for you.
