Hair today, gone tomorrow!

Hi my lovely pink sisters,

Who would believe it!  I get through 3 months of chemo and 12 rads, and bang goes the hair!  The oncologist told me this sometimes happens and he was so right - so it was out with the wig box after all this time.  The good news is that I have been asked twice by strangers where I get my hair cut, so it mustn't look too wiggy. It also gave me courage as at first I was too nervous to leave the house. Now I even wear it to treatments, and it washes easily and keeps it's shape.

I am so sorry I will not get to meet many of you at the Strength to Strength in my home town of Sydney, but I will be having surgery the day beforehand.  There is a forum on the Gold Coast on 2nd October, and I will certainly be at that, and hope some of you are, too.

15 rads and 1 surgery to go, and I'm ready for the 'new normal' .  I hope you are all travelling well and will soon see the light at the end of the tunnel - hugs to you all -

  • Good to hear how you are going - and that you finish rads on Tuesday!   It has been a long treatment trip, and will be such a high when you finish!  Congratulations.  That's great that you have a morning tea group for morale.  I have started going out again for lunches with friends on a regular basis, and it is almost as though the past 7 months didn't happen.  Apart from being vigilant with checkups, life is much as it was before bc.  Enjoy your holiday in WA!  Wishing you all the very best.  Michelle

  • I am on the last 5 rads.  Due to finish 20 November.  I bought some Moogoo Skin Cream but found it too heavy for my skin.  So I have been using the Moogoo Scalp cream which is a much lighter cream.  So far I have a slight pink tinge to my skin but nothing else.  I started slathering my whole body with sorbolene cream (terry white chemist brand) when I started chemo.  My skin got so dry so quickly.  The four weeks between chemo and rads I slathered my chest with the scalp cream.  I still use the sorbolene on the rest of my body.  My skin was fragile by the end of chemo but it is all ok now.

My rads nurse recommended getting around topless for a little while each day.  I have been doing this.  Also no bra, especially nothing with a wire in it.  I have been using the bonds tshirt singlets.  They are soft and cool.  When I go out I just put a light blouse over the top.  My biggest complaint is the awkward position they have me in tends to leave me with sore shoulders by the end of the week.  Nothing really compared to chemo.

Oh, I had a lumpectomy RHS. 30mm tumour, 8 nodes.

As Michelle said if you can get out and do something, or stay in and do something to keep mobile.  It does seem to help me.  I also have a massage once a week (Bowen Therapy)  which helps me.  And morning tea with some other pink chicks once a week helps your morale.

Take care.  Let me know if I can help you in any way.

  • Hi Toni

I love your wig also.  I have a short one which when i wear mine most people comment on how natural mine also looks.  Just wondering if you can tell me what the radiation is like.  I am still doing chemo. and start radio mid Feb next year for 6 weeks.  Do you do radio every day  for the duration or do the sessions peter out over the weeks. And also have you had much reaction, I believe your skin may redden or blister while doing radiation.  And what type of cream are you slathering on.  I have been sent a sample of the Moo Goo, called the Skin Cream apparently it has been recommended for people doing radiation.

I am also a triple negative patient had a lumpectomy on my right breast  2.5cm diameter only 2 lymph nodes removed and given the all clear with those. My surgery was on 4th Sept. Started chemo. 4th Oct. have had 2 treatments and up to 3rd tomorrow, Thursday.  So yeah when I finish chemo will be doing radio so what is it like,  have you had any side effects.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

    Regards

    Debbie.- Gold Coast.

  • Thanks.  Can't wait for my frog fluff to happen too!

I will be thinking of you on Thursday - last chemo -  another milestone reached!  It is such a good feeling to have another chapter behind you.  You posted that you start 20 x radiations in a few weeks - I can honestly say that after 14 (my halfway mark) it is a breeze compared to chemo.  Lots of cream though, really slather it on the whole area.  Let us know how you are going, and congratulations for Thursday!  Michelle x

  • All the best with your chemo this week - let me know how you go.  Do hope you have a good run without side effects and will cross my fingers for you.

Yes - that's the wig - and I wear turbans and scarves at home as you plan to do.  A lot of the pink ladies have said that losing their hair was almost as upsetting as the diagnosis.  Have to admit I shed a few tears, but my husband was great and made me laugh.  It will grow back and is a small price to pay for getting better!

Take care and good luck - Michelle x
