Hair Loss

Hi Sharl Mine also started falling out on day 14 so my girlfriend who is a hairdresser shaved it for me, it felt so good and quite liberating. My sons who are 18 and 22 also shaved to number 1 as did 10 of their friends, it brought me to tears, I was so proud and overwhelmed by their support. It is now 3 weeks since I completed my 6 mths of chemo and now have about a centimeter of hair. I had a bilateral mastectomy in May this year with tissue expanders and next Feb have final reconstruction so will have a new chest to go with new hair. All the best and take care Fiona

That's a good idea Robyn. Maybe your daughter could go crazy on you head Sharl and do a Mohawk or something. Make it a big laugh and it may stop her from being frightened, and you too. Janey xxx

My scalp was a bit itchy,but more sore to touch than anything.My hair started to fall out on day 14.Because it doesn't fall out all at once,I decided to shave my head.My oncologist actually suggested it.She said she had seen more people that had chosen to do it that way,happy with their decision.For me it was the best way to do it.I remember reading on here about someone that let their children help with the hair cutting,and the kids had a great time.It really took away a lot of that anxiety they were feeling .Just an idea;)xoxRobyn

Bilateral Mastectomy went so well I was home from hospital less than 48hrs later....still had 3 drains in though but that seems so long ago now.....unfortunately  4 out of the 20 lymph nodes that were taken tested positive for cancer so that means I had to have Chemo as well as radiation.Started Chemo on the 22nd Nov  my first of 6 ....it wasnt exactly pleasant but the nausea is what i really am struggling with but luckily munching on fruit is helping ...thank goodness its summer season because i dont think apples and oranges would have the same effect!!

The expectation of my hair falling out is hard to deal with especially as my 9yr old daughter is worrying about this also but now I know it will be sooner rather than later............

Yep, that's the first sign that your hair will fall out very soon. Mine was on about day 13. Unfortunately the only thing that helped my scalp was to shave my hair off completely. I even tried massaging my head but it was too sore. You should have a look at an early post today from Hazel who asked the same thing as you. I hope you recovered well from your bilateral mastectomy Sharl, we haven't heard how it all went. Chemo is the pits but I hope you are not suffering too badly. Lots of hugs Love Janey xxx
