Hair comments

Hi ladies,

I have done 4 shifts back at work and all is going well. Amazing how many comments I have had about my 'new hair'. 99.5% have been nice and positive, I think it helps that I am comfortable with it.

One grumpy older man (who wasn't the nicest pre BC) opened up the conversation with "well, you've had a long holiday, haven't you?" I responded with "don't I look refreshed?" He came back with "who's idea was it for the new hairstyle?" Putting my hand to my forehead as if I was pondering my response.  I said "let me see, oh yes, that's right, it was cancer that inspired me to go with this look". He smiled (first one I have ever seen on his face) and wandered away.

One other fellow asked how long would it be before I could get it coloured? I asked how important it was to him that I colour my hair. No answer came from him. I deemed it more important to get him his order and politely move on. Funny how some people don't engage the brain before running the mouth:)

I'm loving the new short style and I'm even happy with the grey.

All in all, returning to work has been wonderful for me. It's another step, a positve one.

I am in some ways a different person now, those hair comments would have upset me 12 months ago, now I don't stress as much with what people think especially those who are not important in my life, take care and I hope you are all doing as well as can be.

Hazel xx

  • Hi all, on the subject of hair loss.  My family are calling me 'ranga' at the moment, as my hair has fallen but what remains is very wispy with a red tinge to it.....so I look like an orangutan.  What remains seems to have gown as well.  Just thought I'd share the comment.  Sue:-)

  • thanks for sharing your story:) You have to be amused, sounds like it did go from bad to worse. I also had a lumpectomy and because I am large breasted and the scar in on the bottom half of my breast you can't tell anything has changed. I have noticed a couple of my customers quickly glance at my chest to try and determine if anything is noticable. It's not like breast cancer defines who we are, hey? All the best,

  • ive got to share this--met someone last week who i have not seen for a few years and she asked a few times 'so how are you really...and eventually i said --oh youve heard i had breast cancer  and she said yes

and then looking at my chest--im wearing a lowish cut top and only had a lumpectomy--she says--'so you had a double mascetomy?''---i said no in fact you would probably not even notice the scar or that ive had any operation at all and she says ' oh thats right you were always small....

and then...gets better..she says ( i havent had chemo and have rather thick longish hair)  --'so you lost all your hair and that is a wig?'---now during the 80's i did have a 'wiggy' style but i was wearing it in a pony tail ....

she does get points for bringing up the issue as mostly i can weeks without any reference to breast cancer so its all good and im still amused by it!!

  • I haven't lost all of my hair so I look a bit like I have mange at the moment. Won't it be funny if it grows back grey and curly and what I didn't lose remains brown and straight? Hahaha
  • My hair grew very quickly, and in fact I think it grew at the same rate as it did before chemo. Not long after my hair was just fuzz,I decided to go without my hats and turbans. My chemo finished in the middle of summer, and it just got too hot.I love my silver / white hair now.And I love not having to pay out big bucks at the hairdresser every few weeks.Cheers xoxRobyn
  • Love all your comments Ladies. I am 6 weeks after chemo and have a fine fuzz of grey/white. Like others I am going to wait to see what colour my hair ends up as I may be able to stop the 6 week regime of hair colouring. It is incredible to watch how quickly my hair grows and how thick it seems to be. Now I want to know how long before I have at least an inch of hair growth so I can stop wearing scarfs. I hope within a few months I will be able to go nude nut as it may be a bit warmer then and too hot with a scarf. Do feel as though I am part of a special club of very special ladies when you see someone with a scarf on, and am happy to nod to them as acknowledgement . Keep happy all

  • I just stopped wearing my scarves as its warming up - my hair is really short but sprouting well (last chemo on 17th June this year) - a couple of my workmates say I am rocking the do. someone came up to tell me my hair is grey - what did they think I did not look in the mirror? and I call it silver - not grey sounds classier. I just laughed. who cares - I now have hair. woo hoo. I love it - its so soft. I won't be colouring my hair for ages, maybe I won't ever do it again. who knows

    Hope you are all well.

  • Hi Hazel. You're right people don't tend to put their brains in gear before they speak. And sometimes people say the best things. Just thought I'd share with you what happened to me on Tuesday at the shops. I have a wig, which annoys me, so I only wear it when I'm working. The rest of the time I go nude nut. As I was walking into the shops a man in a wheelchair said to me " love your head. You're rocking it babe!". He made my day
