got my bloods back and have been diagnosed with Graves’ disease dr said it’s very common and has prescribed medication. Also requested a ecg and scan on my enlarged nodule? I have had a sore throat on and off for a good few weeks it just never went anywhere. But it’s sore right now.

@"Debbie J" It's odd you haven't been started on medication. How did they diagnose it?. The treatment is as others have said to take thyroxine. I think you need an urgent appointment with a GP. This is bread and butter stuff for GPs as it is very common.

I have had Graves disease with symptoms on and off for around 9 years now. We thought I had successfully treated it with medication (twice) but alas it flared up again around the same time as my bc diagnosis...I just assumed I was stressed from surgery etc but a lot was the symptoms of hyperthyroidism (plus I was stressed too!!). Anyway I am back on medication and will probably have to look at a permanent solution eventually but my endocrinologist is in no hurry. He thinks my body has been through enough and since medication is working we are still going with that at the moment.Graves disease can't be absolutely diagnosed by blood test alone so the scan is confirming the diagnosis and excluding anything else. (There is a condition called multinodular goitre and it doesn't resolve with medication and of course the dreaded C word but less likely given blood results etc. Also hashimotos hypothyroidism can initially present with high levels of thyroid then ut swaps to hardly any) The ecg is to ensure the high thyroid levels aren't causing abnormal beats....which it can. Uncontrolled Graves is life threatening (abd also makes you feel nervous, exhausted and jittery) so it's important to follow the plan set out. X

Thanks @primetek I felt like something was going to high that was not in my radar. Wtf. So he precrived medication should I start it or wait until the scan I might go see if I can go get the scan tomorrow we are meant to go away next week for a few nights camping. I jus my told dh I can’t have any stress in my life

The medication can take weeks to work so I'd start it.

Hi @DearB I have Graves Disease which has responded well to Neomercazole several times since 2004. Currently in remission and, to my surprise, has not been triggered by the BC diagnosis and treatment (Lumpectomy, single mastectomy and started Taxol a couple of weeks ago after 4 X AC 3 weekly) all since August. We add the thyroid function tests to the others 3 monthly and they go to my endo - as she says, 'if it flares up we just start again'. It takes a while for the medication to get things level again, the tests are the best indicator, and once you know what are normal levels for you it really helps. It can be scary when it first happens, I had no idea what it was and my levels were off the page. Good luck!

Oh that's not bad. You should have that sorted soon. Anything under 18 is normal and the TSH level will normalise and the goitre will go down in time. It's the TSH that causes it to swell. Your body has been trying to compensate.

Old Wikipedia can give you a good overview but don't get freaked out by the side effects pictures such as the eyes etc....these things occur when you are not treated and only in small numbers anyway.

Lol I laughed when the dr said weight loss I was like I have put about 3 already since starting tamoxifen. I have lost a few the last week. As I struggle to eat when I am stressed.

I have no side effects whatsover. I recall feeling unwell years ago and my GP did bloods quick smart but all was fine.

Yes 2 sounds about right. I ended up on 3 but currently on 1/2 tablet. They tend to start in the middle as not know how you respond and depends how high your levels are. My last lot was about 38 when it returned. My main symptoms I had was palpatations (from illness not the meds) so I was diagnosed quickly. PS...never lost weight with Graves ...just ate and ate to make up for it.

Thanks @primek. I am only on 2 x 5 mg a day. Is that enough to work ? All the side effects sound like my life now anyway.

I didn’t get a slip from chemist the first one I went to didn’t have stock so I went to another and the girl that served me was 12 or so. I just got two little bottles of tablets that I couldn’t even open today.

Sit wtf. I had another long email below the okay. This is shit. Anyway I had scans today and tech Said it all looks ok consistent with Graves. I think what will Be will Be and no use me stressing. We go camping next week so will make dr appointment for first Monday back I think the 8th.
