I was angry to hear about the chemo @LMK74 but good to hear what oncologist said. I had only had tonsils out at 4 and appendix out at 14 before the lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy (9/6) followed by a full axillary clearance in right arm (3/7). The lumpectomy and s.node biopsy was the easiest. Pain wise, it's best not to put up with it they told me. The nurse said if you do, the body concentrates on the pain and not on healing ... it boiled down to that. I'm doing my lymphodema exercises. The worst thing for me was the drain from the axillary clearance as it is a pain trying to sleep. I had a nurse come to the house every day to check my obs and the drain for 7 days. It lost suction twice due to a faulty tube so was probably in for longer than it should be. But throughout the clearance I'd rate my highest pain as 3. I do have some weird sensations in my arm and right breast. They gave me antibiotics, anti inflams. and painkillers if I felt panadol wasn't enough. I was pretty upset after the initial surgery because when I came out of the anaesthetic the surgeon said they biopsied two nodes and they were clear. They do it while you're under and he was going to do a full axillary clearance if the biopsy showed cancer. So for two weeks I thought I was pretty lucky. At the next appointment he said they actually took 5 nodes and 2 of the 5 were cancerous. Apparently the on the spot check was fast and incorrect. Hence he booked me in for a full clearance. This meant going in through my healing biopsy scar and extending it. Nothing compared to what you've been through of course . Just shows you can't really bank on things much I guess. Now I have to go back and hear how many nodes were removed and how many cancerous. I read this effects overall stats etc and after reading this section of my info book I felt like I was going to have a panic attack adding in HER2 positive, grade 3. I am PR neg but the ER is being queried as I noticed it said 80% positive on my core biopsy and negative after my lumpectomy! (I used to proof read - surgeon was surprised when I mentioned error!) So again, you seem to need to be able to have your wits about you whilst being rendered witless. When you do have the clearance, ask if you can take some probiotics if they give you the same meds as me. I forgot to take mine and think either the antibiotics or anti inflams. made me feel yucky. Thinking of you xxx
