Hi everyonei got a phone call last week from st Vincent hospital in Sydney from the cancer genetic dept..my surgeon sent a referral in dec after my surgery a professor is coming up to Gosford cancer centre to do a cancer mutation and genetic testing does anyone know what's involved I gather it's a blood test they are doing a phone appointment first and how long it takes for results? Thanks pam xx

I was diagnosed with BRCA2. My surgeon said there would be no negotiation about it, that if I had the gene mutation, she wanted to do a mastectomy to remove the healthy breast and she also urged me to have a full hysterectomy, in fact she referred me to a Gynae Oncologist immediately after my Gene Test Results came back as she felt the risk associated with BRCA2/Ovarian Cancer was the more pressing issue before doing a mastectomy. So I ended up having the full hysterectomy before the mastectomy of the healthy breast. I am relieved I had these preventative surgeries because neither myself nor my team of specialists were risking a recurrence. It is a shock to be told you have a gene mutation but as I have learned recently it is common for individuals from the same family to get bc without a gene mutation so having the mutation doesn't necessarily mean we are worse off, it just means we are empowered to do something about it and be proactive in reducing our risk.

Hey Pammy, first its like a Consultation appointment, theres alot of information to fill in as well. The actual test is only a blood test, results however took some time from memory, it was 4 weeks before I had my appointment for results and they step through and explain the data etc., Hugs Melinda xo

Can be up to 8 weeks. Mine and my sisters took that long. They'll explain it all.

I had a consultation first which was referred to as a genetic counselling session. Basically running you through what the testing does and the implications on insurance and other family members if you test positive for any of the mutations they are testing for. I got some paperwork to complete and return for detailed family history. Then once i was comfortable with going ahead with testing i was given a pathology slip to go have some blood taken. Results were given in another session about 6 weeks later. We went through the results and they made some recommendations on screening for me to pass onto my female relatives. I my case I tested negative for any known mutations but had tnbc and a strong family history of bc. Best wishes Anne

I had my genetic test yesterday so hopefully going to rush thru the results to help me decide on bilateral nipple saving mastectomy. But I think regardless just to do it as I'm scared to go through it all again if anything is found in the good breast later down the track. Omg I hope I'm doing the right thing. A crystal ball would help right now. Lol
