Hi lovely ladies, Is anyone taking Gabapentin to control hot flushes? My oncologist has given me a script for them but I've been looking at the side effects and one of them is that some people become suicidal! I certainly don't want that.....can anyone give me any advice? Louise x

Hi I have been taking gabapentin for nerve pain since my bilateral masectomy just over two years ago and have never had any suicidal thoughts or any type of side effect. I take it with Effexor for the nerve pain. At one stage I was taking 2 x 300 mg tablets 3 times a day again with no issues. I currently take only two tablets per day to control the little pain I have under my arms from my node clearances and to reduce those hot flushes Hope this helps Mel :)

Thanks Mel! It's hard to know what to do....I hate the hot flushes but I'm not sure that I want to take any more pills!! Maybe I'll give it a go and see if it works for me :)

I was put on gabapentin for nerve pain 3weeks after my mastectomy. This coincided with me starting chemo so for the first week I felt terrible but the the chemo was rough each cycle after that anyway . So I don't know if there were side effects at the beginning apart from a dry mouth. Anyway, on gabepentin 600mg three times a day with no probs now for 5 months. I think they may have made my hot flushes less as I am not too bothered by them. But having one now of course! Lol. I have been advised to carry on until my radiation over and am happy to do so. No suicidal thoughts. Hope this helps. Angela

Thanks Angela. It does help to get some feedback. I've been doing a bit more research today and it looks like it doesn't work for everyone (reducing hot flushes). I've decided to go to see a Naturopath who is quite well known for being very good. I thought I might see what they suggest and then run everything past my oncologist before I decide. It's all very confusing! I would love to have my old self back...but chemo is that gift that keeps on giving!! Anyway, we'll see what the Naturopath says.....stay tuned :)
