Full hysterectomy

Yes Sarah I got life insurance, I got it when I was in my twentys before my mum died.  Even before I got breast cancer or diagnose with BRAC2 I was refuse getting Trauma insurance because of such a strong family history of breast cancer.  I guess they were right because now I got breast cancer. Even check private health in case that is affected or higher premiums.

Thanks Hilary for your wishes.  I still have 2 little ones in primary school so I need to be prepared if I can't drive them to school.  Oh can I walk , it will be take about 20 minutes to walk there and then of course back again. Otherwise I will need to organise someone to take them.

Thanks for your reply. There is a keyhole hysterectomy called a laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy which by it's description is done both vaginally and with some tiny cuts. We do these from time to time and they have the same recovery as the vaginal hysterectomy.

When I was talking to my Onco about the genetic testing he told me to make sure I had all my life insurance etc sorted before testing and to tell my sisters as it can lead to problems if you have had genetic testing, so before your daughters get tested just check.

Thanks girls for all your wishes and advice, that gives me a bit of an idea, what to expect and when will I be able to do things again. Even though I can't lift things will I be tired and exhausted this whole time or I will be able to do most things normally.  Someone said I am not allowed to drive after a hysterectomy, is that true and how long.  

The doctor said I had to be referred to oncology gynaecologist instead of an ordinary gynaecologist because of the BRAC2 gene.  The doctor thought maybe I might be able to have keyhole surgery, but from the information I received having ovaries, tubes, uterus and cervix removed  I think it might be abdominal.  Once I know more I will let you know.

I agree with you Maria, I had my children, I don't need them.  Plus with them gone it will be one less thing to worry about getting cancer there.

To Sarah, good luck with your genetic test.  It definitely is hard, getting this diagnosis, not only did I have to tell all family members on my mother's side but I have 4 girls from age 10 to 17.  So now when they turn 18 they have to get tested, to see if they inherited it from me.   The great thing is now everyone else will be monitored closely.

I had a full complete hysterectomy 2 years before my bc diagnosis and I had the abdominal surgery. I was in hospital for 3 days and it only took about another 5 days before I was relatively pain free but your not capable of lifting say the washing basket or anything for approx another week or 2 but all up it is about 6 - 8 week before full recovery.

I'm so glad that it was nothing more!  You scared me there for a minute!!!  I'm sure it will be as traumatic having the hysterectomy as it was losing your breast but you're tough and I'm sure you will be fine.  At least you won't have to worry any more about ovarian cancer and, as you said, no more Pap smears (yay!!)

I got the heart dropping fast with your positive comment - then reading on, phew.

I had my ovaries and tubes removed (keyhole surgery) due to my cancer being hormone positive. Figured we have our children so out they go. Was no more painful than bad period pain really and only overnight in hospital. I stayed in a few extra days due to having a second axillary dissection. Still went home early with drain, I had had enough of the nurses coming in to check up on me every few hours.

Just as Sarah has said you can opt to have vaginal or abdominal. My friend had a vaginal hysterectomy (not because of cancer) she was in for 2 days and so happy with her results. Less down time is always a better option I say.

I had a hysterectomy when I was 37 (I am 45 now) because of gynecology problems, but I kept my ovaries. I found it hard to get over, very sore for a long time. I must admit back then I was quite unfit, overweight, which I'm sure made recovering a very slow process. I didnt feel myself again for 8-12 months. I am happy to say now even though I have bc now and am having chemotherapy, I am fitter, less overweight (still have some to lose) and am very happy I had the operation. Hope that helps a little.
