Found a lump.......

A few months ago I found a lump on my right breast, went to the doctors thinking oh it will be nothing but she found it right away without me telling her where it was.  Was told to go for a mammogram and ultrasound which i did.  Results showed the following:-

 

Several rounded densities visible in both breasts but no architectural distortion or suspicious microcalcification is seen.  Ultrasound reveals numerous typical and atypical cysts on each side.  On the right the largest cyst lies at 9 oclock and measures 14 x 7mm, on the left the largest cyst is 9mm and lies close to the nipple at 5 oclock.  Ultrasound reveals no predominantly solid mass or architectural distortion.  In cases such as this, any palpable lesion must be taken in conjunction with the imaging findings and further investigation not delayed if clinically suspicious.

When i asked the doctor what this meant in simple terms she didnt know what atypical was!!!  She told me i have nothing to worry about and that i should put it to the back of my mind and just attend regularly yearly mammograms.

The problem is my sister died at age 41 of ovarian cancer with a very late diagnosis (which i know is normal as this type of cancer is hard to detect until it is in late stages), my aunty had a breast removed due to breast cancer in her early 50's and i have just found out my dads mother died of breast cancer.

Am i worrying to much that the doctor could be wrong or should i go get a second opinion????

The lump i felt months ago is stil there although sometimes i think it feels as if it has gone and the doctor did say that at my age (40) it is common to have lots of cysts,

 

Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi Leonie and thanks for the reply.  I honestly dont think it is anything other than cysts as the report says but the bit that confuses me is that i have read that most complex or atypical cysts require further investigation so just wondering why they have not done this with mine.  This is my first time having a mammogram and ulrasound so maybe they are confident  enough that i dont need them checked and my current GP did say that she trusted them and felt i had nothing to worry about but still my mind keeps thinking complex cysts mean something not normal.  My sister made me promise before she passed away that should i ever have any doubt at all get it double checked.

     

    Think for my own peace of mind a second opinion would help.

    Hello,

    Always go with your intuition.  "If it don't feel right - check it out" is my motto.  Sometimes I feel like a bit of a hypocondriac (excuse the spelling) but I have needed to get everything checked as it has happened.  And now my BC is back!!!!  The best scenerio is that because I have had regular checking, maybe I have a better chance of longer survival....Please keep to your guns and change doctors.  My GP, gyno and specialist all have my best interest at heart.  It is a comforting feeling.  Take careXLeonie

    Thanks for the replies girls, I am going to do exactly that and get a second opinion with a new doctor. See if i can push for a second ultrasound and they can compare how it is now to how it was in September.  When my sister was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer she had just turned 40 and died at age 41 scary.  My doctor thinks i am reading too much into it and that i am just panicking because of what happened to my sister and she may have a point but the more i read of other peoples stories the more i realise that breast lumps and cancer is not an easy one to diagnoise either.  A second opinion wont do any harm at all.

    Hi

    I as well really think you need a 2nd opinion as I was told for my lump not to worry as it was just my milk coming in from having a bubby but no it wasnt it was cancer.

    Its never a bad move to get a 2nd opinion I definatly wish I had got one sooner !

    I do hope it is nothing for you though.

    Get a second opinion is my advice. I have no medical background so understood probably as much as you did, but it is obviously on your mind. Go back to GP or another Gp and get a referral to specialist. It is your health and you need to be proactive. Keep pushing because it will not go to the back of your mind. Hope all is ok.
