Flustered? Who me?

I told myself it was time I wrote a new blog - and what a week, Easter was great! no doctors appointments, no treatments - and I enjoyed every second of it.  I had a wonderful cousin travel thousands of kilometres to visit me, that was fantastic!  I got to talk to my children on the phone.  So you may ask, why have you put 'flustered' on your blog title - well, you all know that when times are a trial, some people react well and support you - some try to support you but every time they say something, it sounds like they are condesending  - but more on that later.  On Wednesday I had to visit the Oncologist (I am nicknaming him 'the bad news bear')  - I have my reasons even if he is a nice guy) any how just outside his office I spoke to the receptionist - now she was getting really flustered.  One of the chemo patients who had just finished his treatment was arguing with her - it went something like this; Him: - "I dont need to see the oncologist, I never see the oncologist after a treatment, I am going to see him in a couple of days!" She: "But all the patients see the oncologist after their chemo" Him: "I don't ever", She: "Well you have to" Him: "I dont want to" She: "You need to!" - and so on and on (sigh) .....now honestly I thought to myself - he doesn't need this, I don't need this - and so it went.  Needless to say I didn't get the appointment made with the cardiologist that my oncologist wanted me to get the receptionist to make - and went home more than speechless to what had just transpired.  Meantime I get a phone call from a long lost friend that I had recently written to.  It was quite nice talking to her, but I realised after I'd hung up - I was a bit 'peeved' about some of the comments.  Now before I go further I will explain that I am a very active person, I go to an art group, I sew, I do embroidery, I do mountains of puzzles etc.  I would consider this as 'keeping active' - ok I am not one for tennis or golf, I am the 'arty' type.  This friend told me  - "You must keep active, you don't want to let this thing be all encompassing and take over your life..." Now ladies I can hear the screams from here - Yes! I know! I know that I don't want it to take over my life - bit darn hard some times I am thinking! I let it go.....then she said "I hope you don't drink too much" ..............What the? where did that come from I wondered?   I had to say to her - "Er, chemo and drinking are probably a bad combination, (and I am not going to try and find out if it is true or not) - however I shan't be trying it out to give you the results" I laughed nervously and still stunned at the comment....I think she must have me confused with someone else!  I wanted (but didn't) to assure her that I wasn't going to purchase a cheap carton of wine, lie on the floor - open the tap and hold mouth open and guzzle.  Mind you! there have been occasions lately where that would be tempting.  So in between phone companies stuffing us around for the past month, grumpy receptionists, flippant doctors and other well meaning advisors - my husband alerted me to the fact I had "a short fuse, and wasn't very tolerant" - I replied "No kidding Sherlock, funny about that!'  He never meant any offence, but bless him, he pulls me up occasionally - probably a good thing.  In the meantime, some of the comments from the well-meaning crowd are "You are so brave!".....(Me) actually I am not, just getting on with it or "You must survive this"......yes folks I wrote note to self "Must survive.....apparently this is a good thing"  I know - I am being cynicall and slightly tinged with some semblance of humour - Another note to self "Keep it funny kiddo, this works!"  I can say one thing - I DO try very hard 'not to let this thing take over my life' I do try to be 'active' - the hard part is when I look in the mirror or go to get undressed - I have this little 'reminders' glaring out at me. In the meantime  I have renamed my hospital 'The House of Pain'  - (still trying to be funny!) Ladies please respond and let me know your thoughts on 'if you get flustered' by people and their comments - or just life in general.  Big hugs to all x x x

  • O Josie I am laughing away here at your comments. You may have lost some boob and hair but you haven't lost your sense of humour.Being able to see the funny or ridiculous side of it all stops us from blowing a fuse. I know how you feel about the naked in the mirror thing.I privately call myself bride of Frankenstein as you know. Just don't stand there too long- that's my advice! Well my husband still thinks I'm gorgeous so that's all that matters.Mind you he does have a cataract. O and I love the "plenty of friends"comment. I can add to that .How about the one:"don't worry about your hair,it's a small price to pay for your life"-no it's not-you go shave your head and look like an alien for 6mths. or- " it's just a breast afterall and you are done with breastfeeding"or "you should get the other one lopped off incase cancer comes back".OK,am going to stop there as I'm making myself cranky.Maybe we should put out a book of inappropriate sayings?Might be some money in it.Keep laughing girl.

  • Oh thank God for you ladies!  You are the most wonderful people - I laughed my head off at the responses, haven't we got the 'best' sense of humour and God knows we need it!  You are so right about losing the long lost friend (or 'fiend') - depending how you look at it) I have gritted my teeth through some pretty darn patronising stuff - I wish I had the neve to say what I think to them (we know we are far too nice to do it) but - I want to say things (and honestly this is what goes through my head, so make what you will of it) - things like;     1/ "Try extract cranium from anal area!", 2/"I know you are trying, very bloody trying!" 3/  "Remind me not to invite you to my next party, if I want to be depressed I shall hang myself quietly in the back bedroom", 4/  "Dont tell me my short/bald hair looks great, because now I am really worried as to what you thought I looked like before!", 5/ "With friends like you, I have a better class of enemy", 6/  "There's only two things I dislike about you - your face!", 7/ "Your talking to me like this and your sober?"  - should I go on?  I don't say these things (what worries me is that I am very close to doing so.....) yes I am intolerant, I guess this can happen when your life is flashing before your eyes so I forgive myself!  So far this year, my plans have been well and truly screwed over, so I am a bit of a grumpy bum!  I can't stand BS at the best of times, now I am totally intolerant to it.  Yes ladies, we look in the mirror and see the changes and aren't they so glaring!  Oh, you would have to be going through it to know how deflating it all can be - scars all over the place, sore this, achey that - mmmmm - yeh, put it behind you and grin like a Cheshire Cat (not an option I am thinking!) Besides being pricked, poked, bruised and battered we are bombarded with platitudes and you know what I reckon the worst one is? This little doozy "I have had plenty of friends that have been through it, you'll be right" - Gee thanks AH, that makes you an authority!  You could be talking about a bad case of the flu.  As for my children they find it difficult to discuss with me....Crikey folks, I find it difficult to live with - you all know where I am coming from don't you! Here's some advice, don't do what I did -  I looked in the mirror at my naked body! Oh shucks, I nearly passed out - I got such a fright I haven't seen something that scary for ages!  When people make comments such as they do, well meaning or not - it kind of makes you want to flash your titties (whats left of them) and say "Cop a load of this sunshine and now tell me to get on with it!" You know that ad for M & M's? - I wanna say, "You jump in the bowl!"

  • I loved your blog it made me laugh I have been you many times and I thought of you with the wine box dribbling into your mouth! You go girl. Some people are better off not saying anything. I had a girl where my husband works ask if I ever put Glad wrap on my food before it went in the microwave, revelation "that's how you got cancer"  wanted to reply -excuse me but how come the whole world isn't dead? But I just smiled and thought she's blonde can't help it!

We should live how we wish and do what we want we are survivors!

    Now where's my wine box?

    Love Sarah

  • Can relate to all of this.  How can we "get on with it" when we live it 24/7.  I just try to get the most out of every minute of every day and God help anyone who whinges to me about SHIT.  I know it is going to be extremely hard for me to return to work this time as I found it so challenging last time.  It was so frustrating dealing with "normal" people who live on egos and don't know tiddly squat about life.  Now there are more of them in my workplace so it is going to be my challenge (not for a while yet though so I will get down off my high horse and relax!!)   I was told by a "non descript stupid bird-brain" that I had an attitude.  That's how I survived my ordeal!   Apparently once you have cancer you lose your brain and everyone around you has to reprogram you even though I was their previous mentor.  Sorry girls for venting - day 3 after chemo and not feeling too great!XLeonie

  • Hi yes I renamed my hospital, Club CBH. My husband used to say think of it like a holiday, meals bought to you, bed made for you, beautiful ocean waterfront  views, and FREE what more could you want!

Ha Ha , I can relate. Much easier talking to women who have experienced it themselves.

Have a great long weekend, oops only in Queensland.

  • Well sorry to your long lost friend but cancer bloody well does take over your life for awhile. It's a full time job going for tests, treatments, doctors etc etc!!!! And even when it's over you are still bald and look like a cancer patient for ages. And as for drinking,I hardly ever until I got cancer. Now I have one whenever I damn well want! I think your long lost friend should stay lost! I'm the "arty"type too Josie and I can't be sporty because of my dodgy ankle.I know I'm carrying an extra 5kilos and the medication I'm on makes it harder to lose it.But my thin sister and mum are trying to encourage me to be more active and eat less. I  know it's cos they care but honestly I wish they'd get off my back.I feel like I've just come through such an ordeal and am lucky to be alive- bring on the chocolate I say! I'll make an effort when I'm good and ready! So yes,I suppose cancer treatment has made us abit irritable but some people can say irritating stuff. It's good we can vent it out here.

  • yep, isnt it great when people haven't done the journey know what we should and shouldnt do, i do believe some say things in a caring way, but it comes over wrong, the "you're strong"..."you'll be fine" and so on, and there we are standing (or sitting) agreeing with them, while gritting your teeth and biting your tongue. we wouldnt wish bc or any cancer on our worst enemy, even though i have made the journey i still don't push my thoughts on to someone else going through it now, so i wonder why these people feel they should give us advice (which is normally common sense anyway), so sit back get that wine out and feel even worse than you normally do.... lol....  take care Moira X
