First round of Chemo tomorrow

Well I have cut my hair short and had my first blood test. The house is organised and I am ready to begin chemo! I have several scarves at the ready and even a wig that a friend insist she buy for me (thanks sis). My super husband is coming with me and spending the day looking after me. Just loading some movies onto my iPad so I don't get too bored. Fingers crossed it will all go well and I won't be too sick. Staying positive and know that it has to be done for a good reason!

Best of luck to anyone else starting soon. My thoughts are with you.

  • hi pip, i have only had one chemo treatment and that was 1 week ago.. and i will be having 6 altogether.. then ray treatment and the tablet for 5 years. i still have my hair, but am scared at the thought that once it falls out, then other people will know i'm having chemo. its just like you say, then do you tell other people, and having to rehash the same story... i feel exactly the same. I'm also a person who has been on the go and able to do anything.. now i'm not able to be as active and thats not so good for me physically and mentally.. sounds like we are in the same boat.. I have only told family and close friends...

i have been going to a support group at the mater hospital , newcastle. they meet once a fortnight... my second meeting is tomorrow night. i have also called cancer connect.. through the cancer council and have found them very helpful. they put you in contact with a volunteer who has been on the same journey as me.. but several years down the track. I;m waiting for her to contact me.. but hopefully it is great support... looking to join a tai chi class or something similar..

I'm married with a fantastic husband and i have 3 children. all grown up and living away from home.

  • Hi Jenny

Glad to hear that your side affects have been okay, I have had no problems with my arm with node clearance, so i guess were all different ...

Yes I think it is important to keep a postive attitude even though its hard sometimes, friends visting and maybe taking you out for a nice lunch helps , i think having someone with helping you pass the time while your feeling really sick helps, because thats what it is just getting through those bad feeling sicks until you finish treatment.

I don't like nausea , so for me its been a bit hard..... also i have always been a very busy on the go person now everything has stopped its hard mentally as well .....I have told some people some i haven't, hard to go down the shops incase you see someone you know..... then do you tell them? and rehash everything?? who knows... i need to find a happy medium because at the moment i want to go into hiding !!!

How many treatments are you having ? 4 ?

  • hi pip, thanks for your reply. so far my side effects have not been too bad. as i had several nodes taken out from under my arm, i have had to concentrate on improving flexibility to my arm.. and massage as well. but its keeping my mind on track, that is important too.. any hints.. how are you coping?

  • Hi Jenny

I just had my 2nd chemo ( TAC) on monday and i have been crying alot as well, i think that first week of feeling so sick after treatment just gets you down as well as looking at my bald head and scaring myself everytime i pass the mirror !

Hows your side affects going , i had some new ones this time around.

    Take Care

    Pip

  • I am having my last chemo next week! Hope it is kind to you, and you dont have bad side effects. Love Penny xx
  • Hi birdgirl,

I am starting chemo tomorrow also.  Nervous, apprehensive and knowing I can do it (positive thoughts there).

I have been running around getting everything organised, the house the shopping and the family.  I bought everything red for me, towels, drink bottles, toothbrushes etc. so the kids (and hubby) know they are mine.

I had my hair trimmed from long to ear length, I am hoping it wont start to fall out before my daughters wedding next week; then I will shave it.

Lots of hugs for tomorrow, thankful for supportive husbands.

I will be thinking of you, knowing I am not alone.
