First radiation appointment

Four weeks since I found the lump, two weeks since surgery. Grade 2 cancer, clear margins and nodes. I am still uncomfortable from surgery and experimenting with different bras that don't rub the underarm area. Just bought yet another from Target two sizes larger then normal. Reality is hitting with the next part of this process. Appointment with radiologist tomorrow. Not sure how I will manage. Already emotional having been of HRT for 4 weeks. Also having appointment with oncologist. Margaret

  • My breast care nurse at the hospital I had surgery didn't order a kit - on my suggestion  - as a friend had given me hers. It only had a few books & a disc for partner/husband but no bra. What type/model bra is it, please? I'd be interested in seeing if it's better than the one I purchsed prior to surgery as it doesn't provide any support on my large sized non-operated side ??

  • Yes it is a process that we all go through, the shock, disbelief and fear. Then the settling, coping and acceptance that this has happened but that it could be much worse. For most of us, this is just a bump in the road and we have treatment and gain a new appreciation of life. Glad that you can now feel you are one of the lucky ones. This site is great therapy, I have found! Hope radiation passes quickly for you. Take care. Deanne xxx

    Hi Margaret,

Just adding to what VivW said above, your breast care nurse can order you the 'My Care Kit' from BCNA (us). The kit includes a comfy Berlei bra and depending on your surgery a soft insert. Let us know how you go. I hope your appointment with the Radioligist went well today.

  • Both ladies are correct, you are not alone, it's a difficult time for you. Radiation is not too difficult, just follow their directions in regard to skin care and all should be well. Keep in touch with this network for any questions and best wishes for your treatment,

  • Hi Margaret, I had surgery just over 6 weeks ago. Mine was grade 2 tumor, clear margins and nodes but had one removed under the arm.

It will all settle in a few weeks time as I had fluid build up under the arm and had to get it drained a few times. Rest assured that all will go well with radiologist. They are quite good in explaining everything and ask anything you are not sure of. I'm having a CT scan tomorrow and probably start radiation in a couple of weeks time. I, too, am very nervous due to side effects and the whole ordeal of it all. I started taking Tamoxifen 3 weeks ago and all good so far except do feel tired more than before.

Stay positive and always know that you are not alone on this journey. There's always someone, if not many. going through the exact same emotions.

    All the best xx
