First FEC chemo treatment 3 cycles

Happy Mother's Day to you all!  I have had a beautiful day and feel very spoilt and blessed.
I started my first round of chemo on Thursday, they started me on a low dose due to my autoimmune disease (dermatomyositis). My bone and chest scan came back  all clear except I have an enlarged gland in my neck. They are hoping that it maybe an inflammed gland due to mastectomy.  So I am off for another ultral sound and possible biopsy. Please pray for me on Tuesday!
I am on fluorouracil, epirubicin and cycolphopshamide for 3 cycles. Then I go on to Docetaxel for the same nature of cycle. I have had an injection of neulasta to control the white blood platelets the day after chemo. This again is due to my DM condition. I am so blessed that they are so attentive to the complexity of my condition..
I have been taking maxolon to treat nausea and so far so good. I have also taken dexmethsone for nausea, 3 days after chemo but can't take steroids with this. I am back on steroids (15mg) tomorrow.I do get the odd flare especially during the morning and evening since not taking the steroids. They are trying to taper me off the steroids. I am now down to 15 mg and then 10 mg next week. I will  meet with my rheumy this week. Hope the steroid taper is not going to do my head in!!!

Thank you all so much for your tips to make my first chemo cycle smooth, fingers crossed Wk 2 is not too gruesome as anticipated.. I am now bracing myself for the hair appointment to get the head shave done. Lucky it is going to Winter here, I get to wear cool Winter hats!! Have a great week everyone!

  • Hi Annie,

Isn't it a good feeling to actually get your head shaved before it all starts to fall around your feet? I did it last Tuesday and yes I got a shock when I looked in the mirror the next mornig! However, I donned the wig and everyone tells me how fabulous it looks!!! I am glad you found some new head gear to play with.

I am now fighting a terrible rash on my face and neck which I will blog about and see if any of the others had to deal with that. Ann D I hope you are going along smoothly.

I go back for round 2 this Thursday. Annie you are on Friday, am I right and Ann D I think you are a week later than me.

Have a good start to the weekxxx

  • Hi AnnD,

Well yesterday was a big day, started to notice a lot of hair coming out, so after a bit of a think decided I could control this one thing. Didn't like the idea of looking around the tiles, pillow and heaven forbid food and seeing my hair, so rang my hairdresser friend and had her shave it for me, so it then became something that I was able to decide when it actually happened.

Sure looks a bit strange, and feels odd too, but have started to play with different hats and bands. My parcel arrived this morning, great timing, so now sporting a fringe under my beret, with the result being fairly natural.

So apart from the hair, going along pretty well. Hope you continue to feel okay for as long as is possible. Take care x

  • Good to hear from you again, and you might have me mixed up with someone else, I am only day 11 1st cycle. I have been pretty lucky with not too many effects, and yay.... at this point still have my hair, but who knows for how much longer???? At the moment not too worried about hair, but when it does happen that may be different. I have played with wigs, but not sure I will go down that path either, have seen the fringe wigs and that seems more like me. Have a few bits and pieces for when it happens and some arriving in mail on Tuesday I hope.

The light headed bit is something I have also felt, really weird feeling, and on one day didn't even feel I should drive, but that has all gone for now I hope. Had bloods done today to see how my count is going, so will probably find that out on Monday. I took Dex for nausea and it seem to have worked with it not being a big drama. Being tired for me has been a pain, but not life threatening and just have to learn to pace my self and listen to my body. I am wondering if things will get worse as the chemo builds up in the body after another couple of cycles?

You have a great weekend too and take care xx

  • Hi Annie and Ann,

Hoping your week went smoothly. Annie, I think you are a week ahead of me on the same treatment. How are you now it's week 3? How did you go today Anne? I was very tired and a little nauseated the second day. I took the nausea med (maxolon) for a few days and all has gone smoothly., My blood count is down obviously because of chemo so felt a little light headed today.

I have the head shave booked for Tuesday (Day 12), noticed alot of hair coming out today. Annie, how were you after the hair went? I am a little nervous and really don't want to wear the wig.

Hope you have a lovely relaxing weekendxxx

I hope yesterday went well and the news is all good. You are a week ahead of me with your chemo, I start this Friday with FEC for 3 rounds, followed by Docetaxel for the last three. Will be thinking of you xo
