- primekMemberI always just had a light breakfast and the first day just a bit of toast as I was too anxious beforehand.
- NefertariMemberI had my first chemo yesterday. Mine took from 9 till 10.30 for the education where they go over everything and you can ask questions.
Maybe why mine went so long😂
I was in the chair at 10.30 they were very busy. Had a capsule I think for nausea with a cuppa.
Got infusions started at 11.15 was all done by 2pm. I am told it is quicker through port?
I am not getting my port till monday so thad to go in vein.
The plan was to have a light breakfast but i was not hungry and had relux that morning. So i just had a cuppa and water with a nexium.
They bring you cuppas and crackers and cheese, cold drink, yoghurt , jelly and you get lunch we had sandwiches just ask if peckish.
I hope you have as good a time as i did as i laughed non stop with the ladies and nurses.
I have very little side effects just headache and that was sorted with panadol. A wee bit of nausea for half an hour after i finished and tiredness but i still went shopping today, I love my bed.so in it early tonight.
Good luck ill be thinking of you..... - ShakalkerMemberI have had mild nausea which I have had meds for, this seems to help. Day 3 I am experiencing heartburn and it feels like a lump in my gut that rises, I can swallow fluids and mush and don’t have a temperature or other problems. I was given stuff for nausea and I have been careful to take only as needed.
I am day 3 and this started this morning. What is best to take to settle this. - CarmelSMemberI ate lots of microwaved potatoes topped with baked beans & grated cheese a sour cream. Gourmet it wasn’t but it kept me going & my then 17 yo son reminds me how I would send him down for hot chips but then only at about 4 of them. (Great for him)
Carmel - SisterMemberI would suggest something light before you go to the first one. At my clinic they always fed and watered us well but I don't know if that's the same everywhere so perhaps ring and check and if not, take some snacks and drinks with you. Once you've had that first chemo, you and the nurses will know how you cope with it. I was quite nauseous the first time and had to be given something after the chemo to deal with it. After that, they knew how I would react and the infusion never made me feel sick again (a day later, it was a different story).
- Trikki2MemberHeythere
I always had an 8am appt and was allowed to eat. I had breaky before i went and they gave us morning tea and lunch if you wanted it. No coffee though xxx
Trikki2 - ShakalkerMemberThank you so much, I totally forgot to ask this at chemo training on Thursday. S xx
- ZoffielMemberEat something light a couple of hours before. They will probably offer you a meal or snack during treatment but it's likely to be blah unless you like hospital food. Don't be shy about taking your own snacks or herbal tea--particularly if you have any dietary restrictions or preferences. You may want them, you may not.
First chemo can take a very long time as there are always risks of allergic reactions; things move slowly so you can be monitored. If you tolerate the first, the second and subsequent are usually faster. It is most unlikely you will be nauseous enough to want to chuck, but it's a good idea to have something in your gut as you may not feel like eating when you get home.
The main thing to concentrate on is fluid and fibre so fruit and lost of water. Heaps. Literally litres. I recommend having several bottles of soda water on hand and some lemon to add taste.
Make sure you put some emla (an anaesthetic cream) on your port about half an hour before treatment.
Good luck. Starting chemo just before Xmas sucks, but the oncology ward people are one of the few departments that don't all bugger off for the holidays. They will look after you and we are always here. Mxx - ShakalkerMemberHello everyone, Can anyone advise whether it is best to fast before infusions or eat? I am having the port installed tomorrow and my first infusion is on Tuesday at 11am.
