First chemo treatment completed

Hey ladies, home from the hospital after first chemo treatment. I managed to keep my anxiety under control, lots of swallowing and deep breathing. The lovely nurses had a bit of trouble finding an appropriate vein for the injections, i will be getting a picc put in before my 2nd treatment which will make it easier. For one moment there I thought they going to say, get the picc and come back another day, up goes the anxiety but a second nurse managed to find one, and everything was injected. The fact that one of the drugs was fleuro orange in colour and the nurses were dressed in Chernobyl daywear was a little startling at first, but i do understand they are around these drugs on a daily basis and need to be safe. Saw the oncologist and she explained due to a number of factors, i have a 25% chance of getting more breast cancer. After i have chemo and radiology this will reduce my chances to 15%. So, for me, if something untoward happens down the track, i can say i did everything available to me to prevent it. That's all you can do really. I was given lots of anti-nausea drugs, drinking my water like a good girl and now it's wait and see if and what side effects happen and deal with them as needed. I'm sure you lovely ladies will help if i have questions. I reckon as i progress through, i might just get a better handle on this anxiety:) Take care,

    Hi Hazel and Lana. It's great that your first chemo is out of the way. You'll both be a bit anxious about the next week or so but remember what you've both said. You are doing everything possible to beat this thing. I know you will have plenty of advice on looking after yourselves so I won't go into that but to just stress again, drink plenty of water all the time.     It sounds like you did extremely well. With my Chemos they almost always had 2 goes at getting the cannula in. The second chemo the nurse had 2 goes and then said, that's it I am only allowed to try twice. I was pretty worried and thought so what, we go home then? But she got on the phone and called down a doctor from the ward. He was lovely, commented that I had good veins (probably a great tactic to calm me down!) and proceeded to get the cannula in without any more drama. The picc will save you feeling like a pincushion and you don't need to add to the stress of chemo. Hope the next few days pass quickly for you and that you only have mild side effects. Deanne xx
