Fat-sacks Under the arm

How do you ladies deal with the lumps fatty tissue left under the arm after a mastectomy?
I find them very uncomfortable and very annoying, and sometimes feel pain from them.

  • I remember this. Some called it a dog ear. My surgeon said I could later have surgery to improve it. I have had Reconstruction, and still feel larger under that arm. I think it is worse, the larger size we are. My Plastic Surgeon has offered under arm liposuction. Without surgery, I can only recommend finding the best fitting Bra that you can find. I like a wide side on the Bra. Without underwire is better for me.
  • I have had a double mastectomy and no reconstruction, so not wearing any bra.
Yes, I feel it is a problem for us larger ladies.
I spoke to the surgeon very briefly once, but every time I go to the hospital for a post op review/check up, I only ever see the registrars and they are unable/reluctant to help.
I went through the public hospital system.  I am not sure how to get an appointment with the actual surgeon.
  • I'm not sure how things work in Public System. You don't say when your Mastectomies were done. So how often do you have a review with an appointment? Are you thinking of Reconstruction? Or do you have your mind made up not to? Perhaps next appointments the nurses there how to ask? Perhaps the Recon surgeons are the ones to do either Recon or tidy up surgery. Do you have a Breast Care nurse? I didn't  have one. But if you do give them a call. Ask you GP for advice also. All the best. I hope that you get answers.
  • Op was 8 months ago.  Haven't really decided on reconstruction yet, it will depend on if I have to pay for it (disability pensioner).
There are reconstruction surgeons in the private hospitals here, but not the public.  For that I would have to go to Brisbane, and I have no idea about where in Brisbane to go.  I have tried looking up on the hospitals' websites but end up going round and round in circle clicking links to this depart or that department......  very frustrating.
My next review/checkup is next month and it is a phone review.
  • I would write down all of your questions before that phone consult. Even asking for a referral to another hospital, if they can't answer your questions re side fat. You may also want to go on a waiting list for Recon, where ever that is available to you. Go for that appointment when it comes just to ask questions about options. I don't think the Fat-sacks as you call them would be removed prior to Recon, as that tissue may have good use. It is all about talking to the right people.  If you decide that you will not have Recon, they should still be able to explain, re options.  That does sound difficult for you.
