Ended up in hospital for New Years

I just spent New Years in hospital neutrapenic. Only my first treatment too! My reading was 0.005 nearly nonexistent,  a creeping temperature and a fever made me go last Sunday.  Never found the source of the infection I'm outnow with a countof 1.1, just in time for my next dose next Thursday!

They really looked after me and up here its been sooo hot with thelate wet season i didn't mind the cool rest! I did some small watercolor paintings i will post if you would like to see. I am taking Pristiq at the moment and I'm fairly sure that has helped my anxiety as i really am quite relaxed about the whole affair. My hair starting to drop out in hospital so my partner and i sat out in the garden and cut it off completely!  It was a fun thing to do we laughed about it and he is very proud of his efforts! Doesn't look too bad. I have a high buff hat waiting in the wings that is bright and colorful!

I am anxious about my next treatment i won't lie and hope the side effects of wanting to run across the ceiling and hopping on that space ship to those beautiful stars doesn't happen again, i think it may. I will be given something that will encourage white cells to come out of my bone marrow that will give me cramps, yay! So i don't end up in hospital again.

Overall i feel i am giving my all to ensure i never have to do this mad thing again! Well that's the plan!

  • Hi, my white blood cell neutraphil count went right down in my first chemo cycle too. Didn't end up in hospital but quite scary all the same and I remember taking my temp all the time and ringing up a couple of times to be sure what to do..

In Aus Neulasta (the injection which makes your marrow make new neutrophils in half the time so stops you dropping so low) costs $2000 per shot unless you have actually had neutropenia, when it is free. So they make the first chemo cycle a trial run for neutropenia. Then if our level drops low enough we are given Neulasta injections just over 24 hours after each subsequent chemo treatment free of charge.

I was told I could learn to do it myself or get my GP to do it, or come in to hospital. I was worried about going to the GPs and being in amongst all those sick people, and the hospital was ages away, so I gulped and asked them to teach me. It turned out to be in an absolutely foolproof pack. I was still a bit anxious about it, but did fine each month. It was really good in fact being able to do this myself at a time that suited me and not to have to travel when really tired after chemo. Once I got it clear it had to be at least 24 hours after the finish of my chemo infusion, and at least 2 weeks before my next chemo, I was fine.

I had some bone pain as the marrow revs up production and the space gets tight. But two things helped a lot: a morning dose of Claratadin tabs with Panadol tabs during the day as required, and soaking in my own personal spa pool in the morning when I first got up or during the day if uncomfortable.

I also discovered belatedly that my GP receptionists could have put me into a separate room to wait for the doctor so no contact with other infectious patients, so do ask for this if you choose to go that way.

    best wishes

  • Hi Janet, glad you are home now. You'll be surprised what they can do to help with side effects. Like you, I spent 5 days in hospital after first treatment as I was so ill. My white cell count dropped to zero so gave myself a neulastin injection the day after exhausted chemo. Make sure you tell the onc all of the side effects so that they can adjust things accordingly. The kept adjusting my meds all the way through chemo to help. You do feel as though you just start to come good in time for the next dose. I just kept telling myself short term pain for long term gain. Take care and good luck for Thursday. Karen xox
  • Poor Janet... a changeover from 2014 to 2015 in hospital.

I was sent to hospital after the 1st treatment when my temperature hit 38.  My white blood cell count .. even can't remember extremely low.  I stayed in 4 days with observation until it reach over 3+ and white blood cell booster.  I then had a booster after every treatment myself at home.  It helps. (side effect comes along too)

My cause was my urine infection, that I had came across couples of times prior cancer.  The bugs were there sleeping and hadn't been eliminiated before.  It came to active when I was weak.

Anyway....take care and Happy New Year.

    Cheers
