DIET DILEMMAS

Hello

Posting another message.  Am not in a good place at moment.  Was so sure of my diet until now.  Since diognose been following Cindi O'Mears Changing Habits guidelines.  My daughter gave me her supplements which I have been religiously taking.

Then had thyroid prob after chemo/radio - by chance on the net read an article on green smoothies may cause thyroid probs.  Of course I've been having these daily!!!  Then I downloaded the healthy eating factsheet - and read that vit c can reduce the efficiency of chemo and radio.  Not what I want to hear after i've finished???  When was I going to be told.  Of course I didn't ask, my bad, but maybe just saying eat healthily is not enough.  What is healthy  changes faster than I change my undies!!

My belief in these diets and the feeling of helping myself has been severly eroded I think.  At the moment I don't know what to do.  Bread and water?  But no, bread is "poison and water is contaminated.  Oh no ...  Drown myself in olive oil, preferably with garlic, tumeric, kale and toss in the avacado too."Oh and follow it with green tea.

  • Thankyou  Deanne

Sensible me kind of thought it was large doses of Vit C, but slightly insane me sometimes takes over.  Ive just had a little doze (3/4 hr) and sensible me has woken thank goodness.

My idea of a healthy diet is a little different to the mainstream, I mostly follow the Cindi O'Meara diet with a few tweaks as it just made sense to me.  It is much the same as you seem to follow, real foods, but I dont cook with oils, I use butter, good old fat (yes small doses), lots of salads and cooked veges, fruit, small amount of good quality meat (grass fed), organic when I can (don't entirely agree with this as contaminates will be there as long as used, but maybe if we all go organic as possible more farmers will change), unprocessed sugar (make my own chocolate), only good quality oil used cold in smoothies/salads etc, many different grains and nuts etc etc.  And with the smoothies, follow grannies advice. A little of everything!!  Not having them daily now and steaming the greens every other time.

    Thankyou again

  • You are so right when you say that what is regarded as healthy changes quickly! It can be very daunting when you just want to do the best you can possibly do. First though, the Vit C debate. I asked my onc about my vitamin and supplement regime and she gave me the ok to take Vit C, fish oil and glucosamine (I had been taking these previous to diagnosis). She has a calm, sensible approach and in her opinion, you would have to take large doses for it to really have any harmful affect. I think we all go through a lot of heartache about what to eat/not eat to help ourselves stay cancer free but in the end I think we know what is REALLY unhealthy and can avoid lots of sugary, fatty, low or no nutrition foods. I personally have settled with a large variety of REAL food, especially lots of vegetables, lean unprocessed meat, fruit and nuts. I avoid packaged food and my favourite treat is now some fresh berries with a spoonful of good quality yoghurt. BCNA have a terrific booklet on Healthy Eating which you can download. It has all the latest recommendations from the medical and nutritional experts and some great practical suggestions on how to go about making any changes. Hope this helps. Take care. Deanne xxx
