Depression and Fear

Hello all you lovely, brave warriors. I am really struggling with my diagnosis at the moment and have ongoing fear of dying from this disease I have underlying depression which is obviously exacerbated by the shock and probably the treatment . Can anyone recommend a good Psychiatrist on the Gold Coast to help me through this experience? Much love xx

  • Hi Mandy

I too am not going to off load on you, I was diagnosed March 2012 and my journey continued through to December 2012. I too live in Robina and woud love to catch up sometime please email me [email protected], maybe there may be others who would like to do the same. I am 57, married with 3 married children.

I am sure that amongst your team of professinals someone will help you, I found the hardest thing for me was thinking of me as I thought that I needed to be there for everyone else. Please take the time for yourself.

    Will be thinking of you

Sorry for any mistakes I'm terrible using my tablet.

  • All good Kim, damn chemo brain.x Rosanna a catch up would be good. Hope chemo goes well. Where are you having treatment and what days? I will definitely try to get to the next catch up Deanna! Mandy xxxxx
  • I went to the Face-to face get together that Lorraine organised last week. It was great to meet some other ladies and we had a nice lunch at the Dandelion and Driftwood Cafe at Hendra. I think Lorraine will be organizing another one soon so maybe we can both make it to that one. Glad you have got somewhere with finding some help. Take care. Deanne xxx
  • I apologise for the mistaken name -blame it on chemo brain!
  • Thank you for you feedback ladies. I have had phone sessions with the Cancer Council and I am now seeing a counsellor offered by my Oncology practice. She is amazing but I also feel I may need medication assistance.

The plan is to get a referral to an Oncologist and try to stay out of my head and live in the moment.

As always the help of this forum is amazing. Deanne we must catch up for a coffee soon. xxxx

  • Dear Donna , I'm not going to offload my journey onto you because It is going over the past - the one thing that I have learned through the process of healing the body also includes the mind and soul ! I personally have not gone to a Councillor but have made the odd phone call to the Cancer Council hotline Just to talk through a few tough moments / they were fantastic ! A few tips on self help that have worked for me # yoga - the relaxing kind ! # walking in the fresh air # mantra : "forget about the past - it's gone! , Don't worry about the future- it hasn't Happened yet! Just live today and be Happy ! # stay off the internet medical pages ! # and I pray ! Hope this helps you Xxxx kim ( Nippless)

  • Sorry you are struggling with this, I would ask the medical staff where you have your Chemo about recommendations for help with the depression. Ask everyone from the Chemo Nurses, Breast Care Nurse, Oncologist to your GP. I am sure that depression is a very common issue for people with a cancer diagnosis so they should be able to help you find someone that has experience with this. I think from memory that you have tried the Cancer Council for help with this? They are another avenue to explore for help with the emotional side of coping with diagnosis. I hope you can find someone that can help you with this. Take care. Deanne xxx
