Core biopsies after treatment finished

Hello everyone, it has been sometime since I have been on the network. I was just wondering if anyone who had finished treatment has had to have core biopsies and they were negative? I went for my 3 year check up scans 3 weeks ago. Saw the surgeon today and was surprised to learn that there are two areas of concern that require core biopsies. One along the scar line and one in the "good" breast. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance that maybe it's not anything to worry about. I feel silly being so nervous when I don't know either way, and as we all know, if the cancer has come back, I will just deal with it! Thanks. Karen

  • Dear @Cook65  .... don't feel silly about being nervous.  I am so sorry you are going through this. Sending mental hugs to you.
  • @cook65 Karen, I faced that again at the 4yr mark, in the same breast, same spot more or less, it was hiding in the lumpectomy scar tissue. The core biopsy to me is barbaric! and useless as usually doesnt come back definitive at all, Ive had quite a few and all come back negative yet lumpectomy comes back positive, so I never understood why they bother.

It very well could be absolutely nothing, so all the best with it. Hugs Melinda xo

I think they sometimes do the biopsies just to be sure. All the best with the them. Hopefully you'll get them done soon so you can relax. It's just never ending, isn't it! x
  • Thanks for the response ladies. They make me feel a little more positive. Xx

Hi Karen, I know how stressful it can be and sending out a big hug over the internet. I had a core biopsy in the first year after finishing active treatment. I found a lump in my right breast and was so upset I had to leave work and see my surgeon. Just like @HarleyB I got the all clear. It was one of the most stressful times over the past few years. I told myself not to think about it in the days leading up to it, but I was crying at a family lunch and told my brother I might have had cancer back. It was the unknown that got me. I completely overreacted and I was fine. I almost fainted during my last mammogram due to anxiety so this stuff gets to me. Take care x
  • My first lot of followup scans at my 1 year check up resulted in me having another core biopsy!!
    What??????
I remember thinking - No all this stuff is supposed to be over - why am I starting again???
The doctor and nurses reassured me that most biopsies get the all clear - hmmmm exactly what they had told me the year before when they found I had cancer!
But this time they were right - it was all clear - yay me!
Since then I have been called back for repeat mammograms and ultrasounds at my 2nd and 3rd year check ups. To be honest if I get through my 4th year check up (2 more months but who's counting?) without some type of call back I will probably worry that they missed something!!
So yes it does happen - 3 times to me but I am still cancer free. Please try to concentrate on the fact that all this checking is for your good - either an all clear or the earliest possible detection of a recurrence.
    Good luck.
