Coping with Arimidex

Its not a question of motivation, I am convinced I need to   hang in there with this drug. But the joint pain ( nearly everywhere) drives me insane at times.  Hand  joint pain wakes me at night. Hand pain is constant during the day, but worse with computing, driving and brushing  my dogs. I stretch, swim and walk regularly, but I feel like an old  crock evertime I get out of a chair.  Oh my knees :(

Advice please dear sisters, Fiona

  • Thanks ladies,

I think i am on the rigth track.

Ive been taking 2000 mg of fish oil since the beginning. I've also been taking 1800mg glucosamine with 800 mg chondroitin... the chondroitin did make a difference to simple glucosamine on its own. I also take calcium with a tiny amount of Vit D.

I will try the idea of Krill Oil and see what happens.  One change at a time :)  Otherwise keeping moving is really the best solution... but this is hard at night! Im glad I can keep up my swimming routine. Some times I jog... but only after a bit of brisk walking to lubricate the joints.  Thanks for support. I'll keep you posted about the progress.

  • Hi Ladies

I am taking tamoxifen but started taking fish oil and glucosamine to help with the aches and pains after chemo I was like an old woman. I still have stiff fingers and feet in the morning but am generally good all day.  I take 4grammes of fish oil that's 2 x 2000mg and 1500mg of glucosamine I was taking green lip mussel extract too but we ran out and haven't noticed any difference without it. Might try the Krill next time as I've heard good things about it. Have checked on the sloane lettering website for complementary medicines and they're all ok .

I do a lot of walking and also dragon boat paddling and feel pretty good.

    Good luck you guys

  • Hi Joy, thanks for the advice. I think I will give the Krill oil a go. I wasn't sure what is best, and have just bought a large bottle of fish oil. I was going to ask my oncologist about doubling or tripling the dose, but first wanted to check if it was ok to do this with femara. I will now ask him about Krill oil or anything else he can suggest. I see him in 3 weeks. I will post any relevant information he can provide re joint stiffness. Love Chris xx
  • I controlled the joint pain of Arimidex and Aromisin with Krill Oil. They are dearer than fish oil tabs, but I found them to be much more effective. Also smaller and I have never had a fishy aftertaste as I used to get with many different brands of fish oil capsules. They also act as a mild blood thinner, so you need to stop a few weeks before any surgery.

  • Hi Fiona, I am on Femara, which is like Arimidex. At first I thought I was going to avoid the side effects, but like you, I now suffer from all the same things as you. I would be scared to comeoff the drug, but I have only been taking it for 5 months, and my knees and fingers are so stiff. If I crouch down, I can't get up again. My body feels like I'm 90, but I am only 53. I walk the dog daily, and am soon allowed back to the breast cancer gym and yoga. ( I have had recent reconstructive surgery ). i hope it makes a difference. I am also going back on fish oil, which I have been off for a month due to all my surgery, and my tendancy to bleed. Good luck and I hope your side effects lessen soon. How long have you been on this drug? love Chris xx
