Coping .................& Radiotherapy

Today I had my 3rd of 33 radiotherapy treatments.

After my 2nd session yesterday, I met with the nurse who gave me suggestions for skin care etc during this process.

As I was applying cream to my breast last night, my husband commented that the affected breast looked quite red, which it was.  The redness has increased today & my question is this - is this "normal" so early in my treatment???

Have any of you experienced redness from the beggining of treatment?

I am extremely concerned about how this will be by the end.

My other question is - is it "normal" to be sooooooooooo emotional during this journey?   I am constantly on the verge of tears (worse at treatment time) & just want to run away!

Thanks in advance

  • Thanks Ladies,  I have just had tretment number 11 & am doing Ok, so far.  The redness has settled & I feel more stable emotionally.  Thanks so much for your responses - the support means soooooooo much.  Take care & keep fighting xxx

  • Hi Chele,

I am at Zap 25, i have 5 to go. Yes the redness is normal, the feeling down. The skin will change as you have more treatments, my breast at this stage looks very burnt and is discoloured so dont get to upset when you see the changes it will go away after treatment finishes. Make sure you keep it moist, this is very important. I put sorberlene on 3 times a day, and Aloe vera gel when needed, you will get sick of putting on moisturiser, as i have had enough now.But hang in there i have. There will be days that you dont want to go, last week i ran away from treatment for 2 days i had enough,i felt like i was cooking and itching all over. I spoke to my oncologist and all was good, so back i went today.Just think postive, rest, eat well, drink lots of water.

  • I am day four of my radiation and seem to be getting a bit redder every day. I've been using Moo Goo udder cream seems ok . I have had times of tears and not coping. I spoke to my GP and she sent me to a psychologist which has really helped started to learn ways to stop myself stressing out. Meditation has helped good to take yourself away to another place while having my treatment every day. I just keep thinking be over soon and then on to the new me. All the best for your treatment.
  • Yes,yes and yes.My breast became very red and swollen after the second zap. I wondered how on earth I was going to manage 6wks of it. Boob was glowing like a hotplate by the end but my skin never broke down or blistered. I would relax and soak in a warm salt bath each night and that helped.Straight after zapping I'd put aloe vera gel on my boob and vit e or whatever the nurses gave me,on at night.Tell your team about your concerns because there is usually a logical explanation.I cried alot, especially in the bath tub but I think it's a good thing to let it out and not bottle it up.It is hard fronting up for all these treatments so your reactions are normal. However,if you are worried about crying alot or having dark thoughts then tell your radio oncologist - it's easy to get depressed on this journey, why wouldn't we. You'll find your boob settles down abit over the weekend when you don't have treatment. Hope this eases your worries.
