Confused with DCIS

Hello everyone, I had a lumpectomy on 17th December for DCIS. Pathology came back as Intermediate/High Grade, 20mm & ER/PR+. No lymph nodes where tested or the HER2 test. No invasion.

I saw the surgeon yesterday who says that all I need now is 4 weeks radiation. And it is upto me if I take tamoxifen or not.

I am wanting to hear other people's experiences with DCIS. The ladies in my support group all think that I should have a second opinion, as they all had either a sentinel node biopsy or several lymph nodes tested.

I had requested a MRI but was told this wasn't necessary.

My teatment is through the public health system and I wonder if further testing would have been done if I had gone privately.

Anyway, any advice from you ladies would be greatly appeciated.

  • Hi there - I had high grade extensive DCIS - based on the size I had mastectomy - I also had sentinal node biopsy. ER / PR + Further treatment often depends on if they can get clear margins on lumpectomy - Because I had no clear margins after 30 x70 x 50 mm lumpectomy - further excision was not really an option - Sentinal node biopsy was also in relation to size... I am on tamoxifen as I am er+ Her testing is not applicable for dcis If you are unsure ask the question and don't stop asking until you are sure Hope it all goes ok Chris xxx

  • I am not a doctor, but if you are in any way uneasy, get a second opinion.  If it is the same you may be reassured but if it is different you will be glad.

My sister had a lumpectomy and no treatment on her doctor's advice.  Twelve months later she had a serious recurrence.  A second opinion at the time of the earlier diagnosis would have been useful.

  • Hi if you are not happy get a second opinion, even if you have to pay.

I'm sure even in the public system you should be able to get a second opinion, you might have to wait. Sometimes you have to be very assertive with doctors it is your body. take care I hope it all works out
