Confused re Zometa-Purpose

Is Zometa used to increase/or treat poor bone density?
Is it also used to treat Bone metastasis, with different dosing/frequency?

I've started 6 monthly infusions, for bone density.
  • @Abbydog I have completed 6 infusions of Zometa over 3 years to improve my bone density. I lost 5% when I started taking Letrozole 6 years ago. I was just above the threshold from being osteoporotic.  My bone density has now improved so I will stay on Letrozole for another 4 years. My oncologist has suggested a maintenance dose of Zometa maybe once a year.
  • @Abbydog I am having Zometa every three months. For the past year I had it six weekly. My Onco says it is to strengthen my bones so that the cancer has a harder time attacking. I have Mets in my bones and lymph nodes.
  • From UK Cancer Research site;

    Zoledronic acid is a type of drug known as a bisphosphonate Open a glossary item. It is also called Zometa.

    You might have zoledronic acid to:

    • prevent problems with the bones such as breaks in the bones (fractures) in myeloma and cancers that have spread to the bone (advanced cancers)
    • lower the chance of breast cancer coming back after surgery in certain situations
    • prevent bone loss for people having aromatase inhibitors Open a glossary item
    • lower high levels of calcium in the blood (hypercalcaemia Open a glossary item), which can happen in secondary bone cancer
    I’m assuming (no first hand experience) that dosage and timing will vary according to desired outcome. Best wishes.
