Chemo Options

Hello everyone, I'm new to BCNA having only recently been diagnosed with breast cancer.

I have been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. Breast conserving surgery was successful with a clear margin and 8 clear lymph nodes. I have now been given two chemo options - either four rounds of TC or three rounds of FEC and then three rounds of T.

Has anyone else been given these options before? I don't know what to do. Both seem to have positives and negatives. Making decisions is the last thing I feel like doing right now.

  • Hi Brenda5.

I think she is offering the FEC and then T as it slightly improves the chances of the cancer not recurring so it is tempting. She has already told me of the possible heart side effects so a heart test has been recommended first. I have a week to decide but I am having trouble finding any clear positive/negative comparisons online or statistics in favour or against one or the other. So hoping to hear of some personal experiences.

  • Thanks Marlee.

Can I ask what went wrong with the FEC? Were they side effects?

  • I am on the 4 rounds of TC and going ok.

If I was offered the FEC and then T I would be asking the oncologist to state why the Epirubicin is recommended and they should tell you of the serious heart side effects months to years after treatment.

I am all for chemo but not if it causes more problems than it cures. They would want to put forward a very convincing argument for it. It may be safer nowadays but make sure you are fully informed before you make a decision. Take your time and don't be rushed into things.

  • I had two cycles of FEC (was supposed to be three but wasn't working well), then four of T (extra one to replace the missed FEC)

I wasn't offered a choice, it was what was suggested so not sure of the difference. Others may help better

congrats on your results as well :)

Chemo is crap but you will get through it ??
