Change of plan

Hi Troopers!

Phone call from surgeon confirmed CT and bone scans were OK! Phew! They were done as a precautionary measure..

BUT, after review of my case with his colleagues, and the fact that the margins were too close for their liking, it was decided to do a re excision and take more tissue out BEFORE chemo. I  wasn't happy, but made a joke and said  "lucky I have plenty to share! "  So, I go into hospital again Friday of next week. Hopefully they get clearer margins from this one. Meanwhile I'll be off to meet my Oncologist this week or early next and I'll know when I start chemo then.

Talk about an upheval of emotions! Holy cow!

Oh well, looking forward to relaxing over the weekend, I went to the shops today and was quite exhausted from it!

Till next time , Breaaaathe....breathe iiiiin....breathe ouuuuuttt!

  • I was a bit out of sort afterwards too...think its because you have to lie so still for so long, but all the while you are tense from being nervous!

Good luck for you results Skitzy! The waiting is the worst part I think.

  • Thanks Lyn,

Yes I am expecting my breast to look a little odd second time around...It's still swollen from the first op and I haven't quite healed, also the neuralgia is horrid! I guess I'm not really concerned how my boobs look right now..(that may change once it happens of course). I'll be having a mastectomy and reconstruction after chemo anyways. Why not now? I asked the same thing....my cancer is quite aggressive, so i guess they'll take more tissue and see those margins, then i suppose if they still aren't happy things may change again....so chemo will start straight after the re excision. It's all so confusing..

I've chosen to look at it this way, I have big boobs, always have, no matter how thin or big i was, there they were! Kinda my trademark LOL! I'm currently 14HH! So the tissue removal has minimal impact compared to others I suppose (although I can tell). So not only will the cancer be gone, by this time next year I'll have new hair AND new boobs! And a few sizes smaller! Well i tell my friends and family that anyways. It is very daunting though, and I'll deal with it as i go. Yes one day at a time.....hopefully there won;t be too many changes in direction along the way!

  • Hi Tracy. 3rd time lucky!! Twice I've had a response close to completion & "a problem occurred with this web page, so it was reloaded" & I've lost the lot! Aargh!!! So , I'll try again.

Great news about your staging test results. Such a relief, but what a roller coaster of emotions. Dr'soften don't explain things well, but I gather when there are positive nodes, it is routine, to exclude distant spread. I certainly didn't know the reason behind all the tests when I had them done.

Another hump on the roller coaster ride is the news of requiring a re-excision. I had chemo first, & had asked my surgeon how often re-excision was needed in that situation. About 1 in 10, she said. Great, I thought, that's 90% chance of not needing re-excision. Well, you guessed it. I was in the 10%!!!

Be aware that sometimes the cosmetic appearance isn't as good after re-excision, as it was after the initial lumpectomy. That was my experience, anyway. I was really happy with how my breast looked after my 1st surgery. Five days later, after my second op, I looked at my breast & cried, it seemed so misshapen. She had used oncoplastic techniques to reshape the tissue, but I guess because of partial healing, and the closeness of the 2 operations, it didn't work so well second time around.

Almost three months later, it is starting to look a little more normal, but I feel better wearing a padded bra these days, so they look a little more even. Never ever wore a padded bra before.

Just remember, there is an end to treatment. Take it all one day at a time.

    Take care, Lyn

Hi Tracy, so tough to be told to go back for more surgery, and a lot of hoops to go. It's good that you have a plan, so that you know what the deal is.

Just take it one appointment or treatment at a time and you'll get through it in a more manageable way.

    Sending you a big cuddle

     Trace ????????

  • Bummer about the second op but better for peace of mind. Keep on truckin.

  • So glad your scans are OK Tracey

I went for my bone & CT scan today & since coming home have got stiffness & pain between the shoulder blades, I must have lied down in the same position for too long. Now just waiting for results.

Good Luck for Friday week & although it is hard on the emotions that you have to go back for another excision Getting the good results of the scans is one less thing out of the way. xx
