Breast prosthesis

Hi Ladies , wanting to get some feedback on prosthesis from anyone who has been through the experience of trial and error. I have made the first step in ordering a knitted knocker , thought it would be a good start. I am looking for something that is comfortable for work, I manage a farm that has sheep and cattle, so I am looking for comfort and protection at this stage. I'm not so worried about looks , I have come to terms with my mastectomy, I'm sure there will be times where I feel a bit insecure in some surroundings , but want to wear it as a badge of honour at the moment, you don't go through all this and then hide surely. It would be great to get your opinion on what's been tried and tested , rather than take advice from sales people with both breasts LOL.....Thanks for being there for this sort of support xx

  • Hi there,

I had a double mastectomy and have used both the soft boobs they first give you and also the Amoena prosthetics.

I now just use the Amoena with the Berlei bra as I like the weight of these. I can lift my arms without my whole bust ending up around my chin :)

They took a little bit of getting used to, and they are definitely more comfortable in the Berlei

I am so used to them now, I don't even notice them.

I think it just has to be trial and error.  You will know once you have worn them both for a while.

  • Thanks Christine , I knew someone would not what I needed , am new to all this so not quite sure what you mean by private message. If you could give me a few tips on the overwhelming web site I will then be informed and have a comfortable boob , I'll be dangerous then !!!

Sound like you have already been helpful to other ladies who appreciate your wisdom and kindness, thank goodness there are woman out there like you. Judging on my mother , watching your daughter go through all this was probably harder than doing it yourself. Lucky she has a capable , informed , and I bet loving mum x

  • Hi:) I had a single mastectomy 18 months ago . I bought an Amoena prosthesis and I could never get used to it.I actually gave it away and now I just use my knitted knocker in a crop top type bra that I buy from best n less for about 10 dollars. They have a pocket that it fits in nicely. I only use it when I want to wear something special, otherwise I go without. My scar site , 18 months on, needs no special protection and I am proud to have come through this experience the way I have. I don't care at all if I am a bit lopsided:) Cheers Robyn xx

  • Hi there I would suggest wearing the big Berlei bra (I call mine 'Big Bertha') and a knitted knocker for a while. Once your scarring and swelling has settled (I was advised to wait 12 weeks) make an appointment with a trained Amoena fitter. She will be able to advise which prosthesis and bra is most suitable for you, your weather and lifestyle. You may find that 'Big Bertha' is the best 'workabout bra' as it is soft and comfortable in the rural environment. If you are concerned about knocks from the animals I would think the silicone prosthesis may be risky as they may cause a puncture. The cotton ones are comfortable - and if you are worried (and don't really care what the cattle think) - you can add more stuffing for protection. If you have ordered yours from ChristineM she will include extra padding which is great. Good luck. Keep in touch. Summer :-)
